Background of the Study
Prostate cancer is one of the most common cancers affecting men globally, and its early detection plays a crucial role in improving survival rates (Adamu et al., 2024). In Nigeria, prostate cancer is a significant health concern due to late diagnosis and inadequate awareness about the disease (Ogunleye et al., 2023). Nurses are key players in the early detection of prostate cancer through health education, screening programs, and identification of risk factors (Alabi et al., 2024). In Yobe State Specialist Hospital, nurses play a role in educating patients about the importance of prostate cancer screening, particularly for high-risk populations such as older men and those with a family history of cancer (Ismail et al., 2023). However, the extent to which nurses are involved in the early detection and management of prostate cancer is not well understood. This study aims to evaluate the role of nurses in the early detection and management of prostate cancer at Yobe State Specialist Hospital.

Statement of the Problem
Prostate cancer continues to present a challenge in Nigeria, with a high incidence and mortality rate, primarily due to delayed diagnosis (Suleiman et al., 2023). Nurses are in a strategic position to influence early detection through education, early screening referrals, and patient management. However, there is a gap in understanding how well nurses at Yobe State Specialist Hospital are prepared to detect and manage prostate cancer. This study seeks to examine the role nurses play in addressing prostate cancer in this facility and identify any barriers to effective detection and management.

Objectives of the Study

  1. To assess the knowledge and practices of nurses regarding the early detection of prostate cancer at Yobe State Specialist Hospital.
  2. To evaluate the involvement of nurses in the management of prostate cancer patients at Yobe State Specialist Hospital.
  3. To identify the challenges nurses face in detecting and managing prostate cancer at Yobe State Specialist Hospital.

Research Questions

  1. What is the level of nurses' knowledge regarding the early detection of prostate cancer at Yobe State Specialist Hospital?
  2. To what extent are nurses involved in the management of prostate cancer patients at Yobe State Specialist Hospital?
  3. What challenges do nurses face in the early detection and management of prostate cancer at Yobe State Specialist Hospital?

Research Hypotheses

  1. Nurses at Yobe State Specialist Hospital have insufficient knowledge regarding the early detection of prostate cancer.
  2. There is a positive relationship between nurses' involvement in the management of prostate cancer and the health outcomes of patients.
  3. Lack of training and resources significantly hinder nurses' ability to effectively detect and manage prostate cancer at Yobe State Specialist Hospital.

Scope and Limitations of the Study
The study will focus on nurses working at Yobe State Specialist Hospital and their role in the early detection and management of prostate cancer. One limitation of the study is the reliance on self-reported data, which could lead to response bias. Additionally, the study will only address nurses’ involvement and will not cover other healthcare professionals' roles.
