Background of the Study
Childhood developmental milestones are crucial indicators of a child’s physical, cognitive, emotional, and social growth. Early identification of developmental delays or disorders plays a vital role in ensuring timely interventions that can improve long-term outcomes (Edwards et al., 2024). Nurses, as primary healthcare providers, have a significant role in monitoring and identifying any deviations from these milestones during routine pediatric assessments (Ogunwobi et al., 2023). Early intervention strategies, including therapy and educational support, are fundamental in minimizing the impact of developmental delays and promoting optimal growth (Okeke et al., 2024). In Akwa Ibom State University Teaching Hospital, nurses are often at the forefront of child health care but may face challenges in recognizing developmental delays due to insufficient knowledge or training. This study assesses the knowledge of nurses regarding childhood developmental milestones and their ability to implement early intervention strategies in this hospital.

Statement of the Problem
Developmental delays in children, if not detected early, can lead to long-term educational, social, and psychological challenges. However, healthcare professionals, including nurses, may not always be equipped with the necessary knowledge to identify early signs of developmental delays or apply appropriate intervention strategies (Ajayi et al., 2024). In Akwa Ibom State University Teaching Hospital, the lack of consistent and updated training on childhood developmental milestones could hinder effective early diagnosis and intervention. This study seeks to assess the nurses' knowledge of these milestones and their readiness to implement appropriate early intervention measures for children in the hospital.

Objectives of the Study

  1. To assess the level of nurses' knowledge of childhood developmental milestones at Akwa Ibom State University Teaching Hospital.
  2. To examine the early intervention strategies employed by nurses for children showing developmental delays.
  3. To identify factors influencing nurses’ ability to detect developmental delays and implement early intervention strategies.

Research Questions

  1. What is the level of nurses' knowledge of childhood developmental milestones at Akwa Ibom State University Teaching Hospital?
  2. What early intervention strategies do nurses at Akwa Ibom State University Teaching Hospital employ for children showing signs of developmental delays?
  3. What factors influence nurses' ability to detect developmental delays and provide early intervention at Akwa Ibom State University Teaching Hospital?

Research Hypotheses

  1. Nurses at Akwa Ibom State University Teaching Hospital have insufficient knowledge of childhood developmental milestones.
  2. Nurses' knowledge of childhood developmental milestones positively influences their ability to implement early intervention strategies.
  3. Training and exposure to developmental health care significantly improve nurses' ability to detect and intervene in developmental delays among children at Akwa Ibom State University Teaching Hospital.

Scope and Limitations of the Study
This study will focus on the nurses working at Akwa Ibom State University Teaching Hospital and will assess their knowledge and practices regarding childhood developmental milestones and early intervention. A limitation of the study may be the reliance on self-reported data, which can introduce response bias. Additionally, the scope is limited to nurses and does not account for the practices of other healthcare professionals involved in child development monitoring.

Definitions of Terms

  • Childhood Developmental Milestones: Age-appropriate achievements and skills in areas such as motor, language, cognitive, and social development.
  • Early Intervention Strategies: Actions and therapies implemented at an early stage to help children overcome developmental delays or disabilities.
  • Developmental Delay: A noticeable lag in one or more areas of development compared to typical developmental milestones.
