Background of the Study
Varicose veins are a common condition in the elderly, characterized by enlarged, twisted veins, particularly in the legs. These veins often cause discomfort, pain, and aesthetic concerns and can lead to complications such as ulcers and deep vein thrombosis (He et al., 2023). The elderly population is particularly susceptible to varicose veins due to factors such as decreased vein elasticity, prolonged standing, and other age-related changes (Jiang et al., 2024). Nurses play a vital role in the management of varicose veins, including patient education, wound care, compression therapy, and monitoring for complications (Ahmad et al., 2023).

Kogi State University Teaching Hospital is a key healthcare institution in Nigeria, serving a large population of elderly patients. Despite the growing prevalence of varicose veins in the elderly, there is limited research on nurses' knowledge of the condition and their approach to managing it. This study will evaluate the level of knowledge nurses possess regarding varicose veins in elderly patients and the management strategies they employ at Kogi State University Teaching Hospital.

Statement of the Problem
The management of varicose veins in elderly patients presents challenges due to the complexity of the condition and the age-related health issues of the patient population. Nurses' knowledge of varicose veins and their ability to manage the condition may be inadequate, leading to suboptimal care and increased risk of complications. This study will assess the knowledge of nurses at Kogi State University Teaching Hospital regarding the management of varicose veins in elderly patients.

Objectives of the Study

  1. To assess the level of knowledge among nurses regarding varicose veins in elderly patients.

  2. To evaluate the management strategies used by nurses in treating elderly patients with varicose veins.

  3. To identify challenges nurses face in managing varicose veins in elderly patients.

Research Questions

  1. What is the level of knowledge of nurses regarding varicose veins in elderly patients?

  2. What management strategies are used by nurses for elderly patients with varicose veins?

  3. What challenges do nurses face in managing varicose veins in elderly patients?

Research Hypotheses

  1. Nurses with specialized training in wound care and geriatrics have a higher level of knowledge about varicose veins in elderly patients.

  2. Nurses who receive ongoing education on the management of varicose veins are more likely to implement effective management strategies.

  3. Lack of resources, such as compression garments and wound care supplies, is positively correlated with ineffective management of varicose veins in elderly patients.

Scope and Limitations of the Study
This study will focus on nurses working in the geriatric and general medical wards at Kogi State University Teaching Hospital. Limitations may include variability in the management of varicose veins due to differing nurse training levels and resources.

Definitions of Terms

  • Varicose Veins: Enlarged, twisted veins typically occurring in the legs, often causing pain, discomfort, and swelling.

  • Management Strategies: Approaches used by nurses to treat varicose veins, including patient education, compression therapy, and wound care.

  • Elderly: Individuals aged 60 years and above, often associated with increased vulnerability to chronic conditions such as varicose veins.
