Background of the Study
Multiple pregnancies, including twins, triplets, and higher-order multiples, are associated with increased risks of maternal and neonatal complications, such as preeclampsia, gestational diabetes, preterm labor, and fetal growth restriction (Dogu et al., 2023). Managing such pregnancies requires specialized care, as the likelihood of complications increases with the number of fetuses. Nurses play a crucial role in the care of women with multiple pregnancies, particularly in monitoring maternal health, managing complications, and providing emotional support (Ibrahim et al., 2023). However, the complexity of managing these cases places additional demands on healthcare workers, necessitating preparedness and specialized training to ensure optimal outcomes.

Federal Medical Centre (FMC) in Owerri is a major healthcare institution providing obstetric care to a large population in southeastern Nigeria. Despite the increasing incidence of multiple pregnancies in the region, there is limited research into how prepared nurses at FMC Owerri are to handle the unique complications that arise in such cases. This study seeks to investigate the preparedness of nurses at FMC Owerri for managing complications of multiple pregnancies, including their knowledge, skills, and available resources.

Statement of the Problem
Nurses at FMC Owerri may encounter challenges in providing optimal care for women with multiple pregnancies, due to a lack of training, insufficient resources, or gaps in knowledge regarding specific complications. This study will explore the preparedness of nurses in managing these high-risk pregnancies, focusing on their ability to recognize and respond to complications promptly.

Objectives of the Study

  1. To assess the knowledge of nurses regarding the complications of multiple pregnancies.

  2. To evaluate the preparedness of nurses in managing complications associated with multiple pregnancies.

  3. To identify factors that may hinder the effective management of multiple pregnancy complications at FMC Owerri.

Research Questions

  1. What is the level of knowledge among nurses regarding the complications of multiple pregnancies?

  2. How prepared are nurses at FMC Owerri to handle complications associated with multiple pregnancies?

  3. What factors hinder the effective management of multiple pregnancy complications by nurses at FMC Owerri?

Research Hypotheses

  1. Nurses with specialized training in obstetrics are more knowledgeable about the complications of multiple pregnancies.

  2. The availability of resources and clinical guidelines is positively correlated with nurses' preparedness for managing multiple pregnancy complications.

  3. Nurses with more experience in obstetric care are better prepared to handle complications of multiple pregnancies.

Scope and Limitations of the Study
This study will focus on nurses working in the obstetric and maternity departments at Federal Medical Centre, Owerri. Limitations may include variability in nurses' exposure to multiple pregnancies, differences in their levels of experience, and challenges in accessing clinical resources.

Definitions of Terms

  • Multiple Pregnancies: Pregnancies involving more than one fetus, such as twins, triplets, or higher-order multiples.

  • Complications: Adverse conditions that arise during multiple pregnancies, such as preterm labor, preeclampsia, and fetal growth restriction.

  • Preparedness: The ability of nurses to effectively manage and respond to the challenges associated with multiple pregnancies, including the recognition and treatment of complications.
