Background of the Study

Stroke is one of the leading causes of morbidity and mortality worldwide, including in Nigeria, where it presents a significant public health challenge (Adeyemo & Lawal, 2025). A stroke occurs when the blood supply to part of the brain is interrupted, leading to brain cell damage and potentially resulting in loss of motor skills, speech, and cognitive abilities. The impact of stroke can be devastating not only for the patients but also for their families and communities. Stroke rehabilitation is a critical aspect of care that aims to help patients recover lost functions and improve their quality of life post-stroke (Johnson & Ali, 2023).

Nurses play an essential role in the rehabilitation process by assisting patients with physical, emotional, and psychological recovery (Smith et al., 2023). Rehabilitation strategies may include physical therapy, speech therapy, and cognitive rehabilitation, all of which require specialized knowledge and training to be effective. In many parts of Nigeria, however, there are concerns about the level of awareness and training among nurses regarding stroke rehabilitation techniques (Abubakar & Okeke, 2024). This study focuses on Kogi State University Teaching Hospital, which serves as a major healthcare provider in the region. It will assess the awareness of nurses at the hospital regarding stroke rehabilitation and evaluate how they implement rehabilitation strategies for stroke patients.

Statement of the Problem

Despite the recognized importance of stroke rehabilitation, there are significant gaps in the awareness and implementation of rehabilitation strategies among nurses in many Nigerian hospitals (Olumide et al., 2023). At Kogi State University Teaching Hospital, it is unclear whether nurses are adequately equipped to manage stroke rehabilitation effectively, especially given the complexities and multidisciplinary approach required for optimal recovery. This study seeks to assess the level of awareness of stroke rehabilitation among nurses at the hospital and to evaluate the implementation of rehabilitation strategies for stroke patients. Understanding these aspects is crucial for improving patient outcomes and ensuring that stroke survivors receive comprehensive care that enhances their chances of recovery.

Objectives of the Study

  1. To assess the level of awareness of stroke rehabilitation strategies among nurses at Kogi State University Teaching Hospital.

  2. To evaluate how nurses implement stroke rehabilitation strategies in the care of stroke patients.

  3. To identify challenges faced by nurses in implementing stroke rehabilitation strategies at Kogi State University Teaching Hospital.

Research Questions

  1. What is the level of awareness of stroke rehabilitation strategies among nurses at Kogi State University Teaching Hospital?

  2. How do nurses at Kogi State University Teaching Hospital implement stroke rehabilitation strategies for patients?

  3. What challenges do nurses face in implementing stroke rehabilitation strategies for stroke patients at Kogi State University Teaching Hospital?

Research Hypotheses

  1. Nurses with higher awareness of stroke rehabilitation strategies implement more effective rehabilitation plans for stroke patients.

  2. There is a significant relationship between the level of awareness of stroke rehabilitation strategies and the outcomes of stroke rehabilitation.

  3. Nurses at Kogi State University Teaching Hospital face significant challenges in implementing stroke rehabilitation strategies for patients.

Scope and Limitations of the Study

This study will focus on nurses working at Kogi State University Teaching Hospital who are involved in the care and rehabilitation of stroke patients. The study will assess their awareness of rehabilitation strategies and their implementation of these strategies. The study's scope is limited to this hospital, and the findings may not be applicable to other hospitals in Nigeria or beyond. A limitation of this study is the reliance on self-reported data, which may be biased, and the cross-sectional nature of the study, which may not fully capture the long-term impact of rehabilitation practices.

Definitions of Terms

  • Stroke Rehabilitation: A multidisciplinary process that includes physical, cognitive, and emotional rehabilitation to help stroke survivors regain lost functions and improve their quality of life.

  • Nurses' Awareness: The level of knowledge and understanding that nurses have regarding stroke rehabilitation strategies, including the various therapies and interventions available for stroke patients.

  • Implementation of Rehabilitation Strategies: The application of stroke rehabilitation techniques, such as physical therapy and cognitive exercises, by nurses in the care of stroke patients.

  • Stroke Patients: Individuals who have experienced a stroke and are in the recovery phase, requiring rehabilitation to regain lost functions.
