Background of the Study
Adolescent reproductive health is a critical area of concern globally, as early sexual activity, unintended pregnancies, and sexually transmitted infections (STIs) pose significant health risks to young girls (Akinmoladun et al., 2023). Nurses are in a unique position to educate adolescent girls about reproductive health, offering information about safe sexual practices, menstrual hygiene, and contraceptive methods. However, despite the importance of reproductive health education, there are challenges such as cultural barriers, lack of resources, and insufficient training, which may hinder nurses’ ability to effectively engage with this population (Ayodele et al., 2024).

At Edo State Specialist Hospital, there is a recognized need to improve reproductive health education programs for adolescent girls, particularly in the face of rising cases of early pregnancies and STIs. Nurses are essential in providing this education, but the extent of their involvement and the effectiveness of their strategies remain unclear. This study will examine the role of nurses in promoting reproductive health education among adolescent girls at Edo State Specialist Hospital, investigating their current practices, knowledge, and the challenges they face in delivering this critical information.

Statement of the Problem
Adolescent girls in Edo State face significant challenges regarding reproductive health, including early pregnancies and STIs. Nurses play a crucial role in providing education on these issues, yet there is limited research on how effectively they are fulfilling this role at Edo State Specialist Hospital. Understanding the barriers to effective reproductive health education and the strategies employed by nurses is necessary to improve the health outcomes of adolescent girls.

Objectives of the Study

  1. To assess the level of nurses' knowledge and understanding of reproductive health education for adolescent girls.

  2. To examine the strategies employed by nurses in promoting reproductive health education to adolescent girls.

  3. To identify challenges and barriers that nurses face in delivering reproductive health education to adolescent girls.

Research Questions

  1. What is the level of knowledge among nurses regarding reproductive health education for adolescent girls at Edo State Specialist Hospital?

  2. What strategies do nurses use to promote reproductive health education among adolescent girls?

  3. What challenges do nurses face in providing reproductive health education to adolescent girls at Edo State Specialist Hospital?

Research Hypotheses

  1. There is no significant relationship between nurses’ knowledge of reproductive health and the effectiveness of their education efforts.

  2. Nurses who have received specialized training in adolescent reproductive health are more likely to engage in effective educational practices.

  3. Cultural and social barriers significantly hinder nurses' ability to provide reproductive health education to adolescent girls.

Scope and Limitations of the Study
The study will focus on nurses working in the adolescent health and maternity units at Edo State Specialist Hospital. Limitations include the potential for bias in self-reported data and the challenge of generalizing findings from one hospital setting.
