Background of the Study
Holistic patient care is an approach that recognizes the multidimensional nature of health, focusing not only on the physical aspects of a patient's condition but also on their psychological, social, and spiritual well-being. Nurses are integral to the provision of holistic care, as they are often the primary healthcare providers involved in daily patient interactions (Sani et al., 2023). The implementation of holistic care models is known to improve patient satisfaction, enhance the therapeutic relationship, and lead to better health outcomes, particularly in settings where patients have chronic or complex health conditions.
At Taraba State Specialist Hospital, there is an increasing focus on providing comprehensive care to patients. However, the implementation of holistic care models remains inconsistent, and the awareness of nurses regarding the principles of holistic care is not well-documented. Research indicates that nurses' understanding of holistic care models may be influenced by their education, experience, and institutional support (Agbo et al., 2024). As nurses are often the frontline caregivers, their ability to implement these models effectively is crucial for patient-centered care.
This study will appraise the awareness and implementation of holistic patient care models by nurses at Taraba State Specialist Hospital, assess their training and attitudes towards these models, and explore the barriers to their full implementation.
Statement of the Problem
Despite the recognized benefits of holistic patient care, its implementation in general hospitals, including Taraba State Specialist Hospital, may be hindered by a lack of awareness among nurses, insufficient training, or inadequate institutional support. Without a comprehensive understanding and proper application of holistic care, the quality of patient care may be compromised. This study will evaluate the awareness and implementation of holistic patient care models by nurses at Taraba State Specialist Hospital.
Objectives of the Study
To assess the level of nurses' awareness of holistic patient care models at Taraba State Specialist Hospital.
To evaluate the implementation of holistic care practices by nurses at Taraba State Specialist Hospital.
To identify barriers nurses face in implementing holistic care models in the hospital.
Research Questions
What is the level of awareness among nurses regarding holistic patient care models at Taraba State Specialist Hospital?
How do nurses implement holistic care practices in patient care at Taraba State Specialist Hospital?
What barriers do nurses encounter in implementing holistic patient care models at Taraba State Specialist Hospital?
Research Hypotheses
There is no significant relationship between nurses' awareness of holistic care models and their implementation of these practices at Taraba State Specialist Hospital.
Nurses with training in holistic care are more likely to implement holistic care models effectively.
Institutional factors such as policy and resources do not significantly affect nurses' ability to implement holistic care models at Taraba State Specialist Hospital.
Scope and Limitations of the Study
The study will focus on nurses working at Taraba State Specialist Hospital, particularly in departments where holistic care is most relevant. The limitations of the study include the potential for self-reporting biases and the narrow scope, as it will only examine one hospital.
