Background of the Study
The COVID-19 pandemic has highlighted the critical role of nurses in managing infectious diseases, particularly respiratory pandemics. Nurses, as frontline healthcare workers, are essential in preventing the spread of infection, providing care for infected patients, and ensuring appropriate protective measures are in place. The ability of nurses to effectively manage COVID-19 and other respiratory pandemics depends on their preparedness, which includes their knowledge of infection control protocols, personal protective equipment (PPE) usage, and crisis management strategies (Okorie et al., 2023).

At Rivers State University Teaching Hospital (RSUTH), nurses are at the heart of the hospital's response to COVID-19, as well as other potential respiratory pandemics. However, there have been concerns about the level of preparedness among healthcare workers in managing respiratory infections. A lack of sufficient training and inadequate resources could impede nurses' ability to respond effectively during pandemics. Furthermore, the psychosocial and emotional challenges posed by working in high-risk environments require nurses to be well-prepared not only professionally but also mentally and emotionally (Ibe et al., 2023).

This study aims to assess nurses' preparedness for managing COVID-19 and other respiratory pandemics at RSUTH, examining their knowledge, skills, and the resources available to them in handling these crises.

Statement of the Problem
Despite the global scale of the COVID-19 pandemic, studies have shown that many healthcare workers, including nurses, are inadequately prepared to manage such crises due to a lack of training, equipment, and support (Ogbonna et al., 2023). At RSUTH, there is concern regarding the preparedness of nurses to manage COVID-19 and other respiratory pandemics. This study will explore the factors affecting nurses' preparedness, focusing on their knowledge, attitudes, and access to resources necessary for effective pandemic management.

Objectives of the Study

  1. To assess the level of knowledge and preparedness of nurses at RSUTH for managing COVID-19 and other respiratory pandemics.

  2. To evaluate the resources and support systems available to nurses at RSUTH for pandemic preparedness.

  3. To identify the challenges nurses face in managing respiratory pandemics at RSUTH.

Research Questions

  1. What is the level of knowledge and preparedness of nurses at RSUTH for managing COVID-19 and other respiratory pandemics?

  2. What resources and support systems are available to nurses at RSUTH for pandemic preparedness?

  3. What challenges do nurses face in managing respiratory pandemics at RSUTH?

Research Hypotheses

  1. There is no significant relationship between nurses' preparedness and their ability to manage COVID-19 and other respiratory pandemics at RSUTH.

  2. Nurses who have received specialized training in pandemic response are more likely to manage respiratory pandemics effectively.

  3. Environmental factors (e.g., availability of PPE, support from hospital management) do not significantly affect nurses' preparedness for managing respiratory pandemics at RSUTH.

Scope and Limitations of the Study
The study will focus on nurses at Rivers State University Teaching Hospital who are involved in the management of respiratory pandemics. Limitations include the potential for bias in self-reported data and the focus on a single institution, which may limit the applicability of the findings to other hospitals.

Definitions of Terms

  • Respiratory Pandemics: Widespread outbreaks of respiratory infections, including COVID-19, influenza, and other diseases caused by viruses or bacteria affecting the respiratory system.

  • Preparedness: The state of being ready to manage and respond to health crises, including knowledge, training, and access to necessary resources.

  • Personal Protective Equipment (PPE): Clothing or equipment worn by healthcare workers to protect against infectious agents, including masks, gloves, gowns, and face shields.
