Background of the study
Toxic epidermal necrolysis (TEN) is a rare, but severe, life-threatening dermatologic condition characterized by widespread epidermal detachment and mucosal involvement, often triggered by drug reactions (Hussein et al., 2023). The condition is associated with high morbidity and mortality rates, requiring immediate medical intervention to manage fluid balance, prevent secondary infections, and provide pain relief (Ebrahim et al., 2024). Nurses play a critical role in the early identification and management of TEN, as well as in the coordination of care with dermatologists and other specialists. Given the complexity of TEN, early diagnosis and prompt treatment can significantly improve the patient's prognosis (Weiss & Chang, 2024).
At Ondo State Specialist Hospital, nurses are tasked with managing patients with various dermatological conditions, including TEN. However, due to the rarity of the condition, there may be limited exposure to it in clinical practice, leading to gaps in knowledge and potential delays in treatment (Khatri et al., 2023). The lack of standardized protocols for the management of TEN in many healthcare settings further complicates effective care delivery. This study seeks to assess nurses' knowledge and management practices related to TEN at Ondo State Specialist Hospital to identify areas for improvement in care delivery.
Statement of the problem
Toxic epidermal necrolysis, although rare, is a serious condition that demands immediate intervention. Nurses at Ondo State Specialist Hospital may encounter challenges in managing TEN due to limited exposure or knowledge gaps about the condition. Given the severity of the disease, inadequate knowledge and delayed management could result in increased patient morbidity and mortality. This study aims to assess the level of knowledge and management strategies among nurses for managing toxic epidermal necrolysis at Ondo State Specialist Hospital.

To assess the level of knowledge of nurses regarding the recognition and management of toxic epidermal necrolysis at Ondo State Specialist Hospital.

Scope and limitations of the study
This study will focus on nurses working in the dermatology and intensive care units of Ondo State Specialist Hospital. The scope will be limited to assessing their knowledge and management practices regarding toxic epidermal necrolysis. One limitation is that the condition is rare, which may limit the sample size of affected patients. Additionally, the findings may not be generalizable to hospitals outside the region.
