Background of the Study

Cardiovascular diseases (CVDs) remain one of the leading causes of morbidity and mortality worldwide, necessitating effective management strategies that include both medical interventions and supportive care (World Health Organization [WHO], 2024). The patient-nurse relationship plays a crucial role in improving adherence to treatment, promoting lifestyle modifications, and enhancing overall patient well-being (Adeyemi & Johnson, 2023). Effective communication, trust, empathy, and emotional support from nurses contribute to better health outcomes among cardiovascular patients.

At the Federal Teaching Hospital, Gombe, nurses are directly involved in educating patients on medication adherence, dietary adjustments, and exercise regimens, all of which are essential for managing CVDs. However, poor nurse-patient interactions, lack of patient engagement, and ineffective communication can negatively affect treatment outcomes (Eze & Bassey, 2024). This study aims to assess the impact of patient-nurse relationships on cardiovascular disease management to improve the quality of care provided in the hospital.

Statement of the Problem

Despite advancements in cardiovascular disease management, many patients still struggle with adherence to treatment plans and lifestyle modifications, leading to frequent hospitalizations and complications (Ogunleye et al., 2023). Poor nurse-patient relationships, characterized by inadequate communication and limited emotional support, have been identified as contributing factors to poor adherence (Bassey & Olumide, 2024). In Federal Teaching Hospital, Gombe, the extent to which the patient-nurse relationship influences CVD management remains unclear. This study seeks to assess the role of nurse-patient interactions in the effective management of cardiovascular diseases.

Objectives of the Study

  1. To examine the nature of patient-nurse relationships in managing cardiovascular diseases.
  2. To assess the impact of patient-nurse interactions on treatment adherence and health outcomes.
  3. To identify challenges affecting patient-nurse relationships in cardiovascular disease management.

Research Questions

  1. How does the patient-nurse relationship influence the management of cardiovascular diseases?
  2. What is the impact of nurse-patient interactions on medication adherence and lifestyle modifications?
  3. What are the challenges affecting effective patient-nurse relationships in cardiovascular disease management?

Research Hypotheses

  1. Strong patient-nurse relationships significantly improve adherence to cardiovascular disease management.
  2. Effective communication between nurses and patients leads to better health outcomes in cardiovascular disease management.
  3. Challenges in patient-nurse relationships negatively affect treatment adherence and recovery.
