Background of the Study

Patient satisfaction is a key indicator of healthcare quality and directly influences patient outcomes, adherence to treatment, and overall hospital reputation. In cardiac units, where patients require specialized and continuous care, nursing services play a crucial role in determining patient satisfaction. The quality of nursing care, including responsiveness, communication, technical competence, and emotional support, significantly affects how patients perceive their hospital experience.

At the University of Uyo Teaching Hospital (UUTH), cardiac patients require comprehensive nursing care that includes medication administration, patient education, psychological support, and close monitoring of vital signs. However, variations in nurse-patient ratios, workload, and available resources can influence the level of care provided. Understanding patient satisfaction with nursing care in cardiac units can provide insights into areas needing improvement and help enhance patient-centered care.

Despite the growing emphasis on improving healthcare quality in Nigeria, limited studies have assessed patient satisfaction specifically in cardiac units. Evaluating patient satisfaction in UUTH will help identify strengths and weaknesses in nursing care and contribute to policy recommendations for improved healthcare delivery.

Statement of the Problem

Patient satisfaction with nursing care is an essential component of quality healthcare, yet it remains inadequately studied in many Nigerian hospitals, particularly in specialized units such as cardiac care. While nurses in cardiac units are responsible for critical aspects of patient management, factors such as inadequate staffing, high patient volume, and resource constraints may affect service delivery.

At UUTH, the level of satisfaction among cardiac patients regarding nursing care remains unclear. Patients’ perceptions of care may be influenced by factors such as communication, timely intervention, and empathy from nursing staff. Without a clear understanding of these factors, it is difficult to implement targeted improvements. This study seeks to evaluate patient satisfaction with nursing care in the cardiac unit of UUTH and identify key areas for enhancement.

Objectives of the Study

  1. To assess the overall level of patient satisfaction with nursing care in the cardiac unit of UUTH.
  2. To examine factors influencing patient satisfaction with nursing care in the cardiac unit.
  3. To identify areas for improvement in nursing care delivery in the cardiac unit of UUTH.

Research Questions

  1. What is the level of patient satisfaction with nursing care in the cardiac unit of UUTH?
  2. What factors influence patient satisfaction with nursing care in the cardiac unit?
  3. What improvements can be made to enhance patient satisfaction with nursing care in the cardiac unit?

Research Hypotheses

  1. Patients in the cardiac unit of UUTH report high levels of satisfaction with nursing care.
  2. Nurse-patient communication and responsiveness significantly influence patient satisfaction.
  3. Limited staffing and resource constraints negatively impact patient satisfaction in the cardiac unit.

Scope and Limitations of the Study

This study will focus on patients admitted to the cardiac unit of UUTH, evaluating their satisfaction with nursing care. It will consider factors such as nurse responsiveness, communication, and emotional support. Limitations may include variations in individual patient expectations and possible bias in self-reported satisfaction levels.

Definitions of Terms

  • Nursing Care: The comprehensive healthcare services provided by nurses, including monitoring, medication administration, and patient education.
  • Cardiac Unit: A specialized hospital department that provides care for patients with heart-related conditions.
