Background of the study

A social group as well as a major group of individuals, peers make form what is known as a peer group. A group of individuals who share commonalities with one another, such as age, background, and social standing, may be described as belonging to the same peer group. It is probable that the members of this group will have an effect on the person's conduct as well as the views that they hold. There are hierarchies within peer groups in addition to diverse patterns of behavior (Achebe, 2022). Every member of the group is expected to abide by the established code of conduct, which is communicated to them in the form of rules and regulations, as well as ideas, dos, and don'ts, attitudes, and points of view. Children learn how to form relationships with their peers on their own and have the opportunity to discuss interests that adults may not share with children, such as clothing and popular music, or may not permit, such as drugs and sex. Adults may also find it difficult to discuss these topics with their own children.

On the other hand, Buabeng (2022) shows that an individual's peer group has a substantial impact on both the intellectual and personal growth of that individual. The conjectures that peer groups have a considerable influence on academic accomplishment have been supported by a number of longitudinal research; nevertheless, comparatively few studies have investigated the impact that peer groups have on tests of cognitive ability. In addition, realizing one's ambitions in life is not a simple undertaking; rather, it calls for an exhaustive process that comprises decision-making, assistance, and counseling. Because of this, students often choose their subject selections for the senior secondary school certificate examination (SSCE) based not only on the importance of the topics to the student's intended field of work, but also on the advice of their peers and their parents (Gelatt, 2022). One of the purposes of education is to help individuals not only properly integrate into society, but also to develop their minds to understand their surroundings and to instill a sense of national consciousness in their lives. This is one of the goals of education. Another goal of education is to bring about national consciousness in the lives of individuals. In addition to these overarching goals of education, the specific objective of secondary education is to provide students with the skills necessary to navigate life in an increasingly digital and technologically advanced world. In the current era of Western education, which has brought with it an explosion of knowledge, society has become complex, to the extent that students in senior secondary school have become exposed to the problem of choosing from a number of subjects in order to qualify for the course of their choice in the university. This is a problem because education in the West has brought about a knowledge explosion, which has brought about a complex society. The selection of the topics to be covered is of the utmost significance since, regardless of whatever option is selected, it will have an impact, either favorably or badly, on the remaining pupils (Gesinde,2022).

Ezeani (2021) asserts that the majority of the time, students make decisions that are not practical since these choices are founded on factors such as encouragement, the impact of peer groups, reputation, vocational worth, and sex. Given the information presented above, it is critical that students get sound advice on the professions from which they might choose to choose. This will allow the students to pick the subjects in which they have ability. At the moment, Nigeria as a nation is unable to provide suitable work opportunities for all of its graduates. Because the capacity to find gainful job is the pinnacle objective of formal education, this presents a significant challenge. It's possible that this issue arose because secondary schools lacked the resources necessary to provide adequate student help in the form of guidance and counseling services.
