Background of the Study

Workplace challenges in nursing practice include complex patient care situations, high-stress environments, staff shortages, ethical dilemmas, and the need for continuous professional development (Ajayi & Suleiman, 2024). Preparing nursing students to navigate these challenges is a critical aspect of nursing education. Through a combination of theoretical education, clinical practice, and professional development, nursing programs aim to equip students with the skills, knowledge, and attitudes necessary to excel in the workforce (Suleiman & Adeola, 2023).

At the University of Maiduguri College of Health Sciences, nursing students are trained in various aspects of patient care, clinical skills, and ethical standards. However, there is limited research on how well these students are prepared for the workplace challenges they will face after graduation. This study aims to examine the preparedness of nursing students at the University of Maiduguri College of Health Sciences for the challenges of nursing practice, focusing on how their education has equipped them with the necessary skills to handle real-world clinical scenarios and professional demands.

Statement of the Problem

While nursing education focuses on preparing students for clinical practice, many graduates report facing significant challenges in their first years of employment, such as high patient loads, decision-making under pressure, and working with interdisciplinary teams (Abubakar & Aliyu, 2023). This indicates that there may be gaps in the preparedness of nursing students for the workplace. This study seeks to investigate the extent to which nursing education at the University of Maiduguri College of Health Sciences adequately prepares students to handle these workplace challenges.

Objectives of the Study

1. To assess the level of preparedness of nursing students at the University of Maiduguri College of Health Sciences for workplace challenges in nursing practice.

2. To examine how nursing education influences students' ability to handle workplace challenges.

3. To propose recommendations for improving students' preparedness for workplace challenges in nursing education.

Research Questions

1. How well are nursing students at the University of Maiduguri College of Health Sciences prepared for workplace challenges in nursing practice?

2. In what ways does nursing education prepare students to handle workplace challenges such as patient care, teamwork, and decision-making?

3. What strategies can be implemented to better prepare nursing students for the challenges of clinical practice?

Research Hypotheses

1. Nursing students at the University of Maiduguri College of Health Sciences are inadequately prepared for workplace challenges in nursing practice.

2. Nursing students with higher levels of clinical experience and education are better prepared to handle workplace challenges in nursing practice.

3. Improving the curriculum and clinical training will enhance the preparedness of nursing students for workplace challenges.

Scope and Limitations of the Study This study will focus on nursing students at the University of Maiduguri College of Health Sciences and assess their preparedness for workplace challenges. Limitations include the potential for differences in individual clinical experiences and the challenges posed by resource constraints in healthcare settings.

Definitions of Terms

• Workplace Challenges: Difficulties and demands encountered by nurses in clinical practice, including patient care, ethical dilemmas, and team dynamics (Ajayi & Suleiman, 2024).

• Preparedness: The ability of nursing students to apply their theoretical knowledge, clinical skills, and professional behavior to meet the demands of nursing practice (Suleiman & Adeola, 2023).

• Clinical Practice: Practical, hands-on training in healthcare settings where nursing students develop and refine their clinical skills (Abubakar & Aliyu, 2023).
