Background of the Study

Hypertension is a major global public health issue, contributing significantly to cardiovascular diseases and other chronic conditions. Blood pressure monitoring is a crucial component in managing hypertension and preventing complications such as stroke, heart attack, and kidney disease. Effective adherence to blood pressure monitoring recommendations by hypertensive patients plays a pivotal role in controlling the disease and improving patient outcomes. Nurses are key healthcare providers who educate, monitor, and provide ongoing support to hypertensive patients, ensuring they adhere to treatment regimens and blood pressure monitoring guidelines.

In Kaduna State, where the prevalence of hypertension is rising, the role of nurses in promoting adherence to blood pressure monitoring is vital. However, there is limited research on the specific impact of nurses on this adherence. Nurses can influence patients' attitudes toward blood pressure monitoring by providing education, addressing barriers to adherence, and offering personalized care plans. This study aims to assess the impact of nurses' interventions on the adherence of hypertensive patients to blood pressure monitoring guidelines in Kaduna State.

Statement of the Problem

Despite the known benefits of regular blood pressure monitoring for hypertensive patients, adherence to monitoring practices remains a challenge. Nurses in Kaduna State may face obstacles such as limited resources, patient non-compliance, or lack of consistent follow-up, which could hinder their effectiveness in promoting adherence. The study seeks to examine how nurses' involvement in the care process affects adherence to blood pressure monitoring and identify factors that influence patient behavior.

Objectives of the Study

  1. To assess the role of nurses in promoting adherence to blood pressure monitoring in hypertensive patients in Kaduna State.
  2. To evaluate factors that influence adherence to blood pressure monitoring among hypertensive patients in Kaduna State.
  3. To identify barriers to adherence and propose strategies to improve patient compliance with blood pressure monitoring.

Research Questions

  1. How do nurses influence adherence to blood pressure monitoring in hypertensive patients in Kaduna State?
  2. What factors affect hypertensive patients' adherence to blood pressure monitoring in Kaduna State?
  3. What barriers prevent hypertensive patients from adhering to blood pressure monitoring practices, and how can these barriers be addressed?

Research Hypotheses

  1. Nurses in Kaduna State have a positive impact on hypertensive patients' adherence to blood pressure monitoring practices.
  2. Hypertensive patients’ adherence to blood pressure monitoring is influenced by factors such as nurse-patient interaction, patient education, and healthcare access.
  3. Barriers such as lack of knowledge, financial constraints, and inadequate healthcare resources reduce adherence to blood pressure monitoring among hypertensive patients in Kaduna State.

Scope and Limitations of the Study

This study will focus on hypertensive patients in healthcare facilities in Kaduna State, evaluating the impact of nurses' involvement in blood pressure monitoring adherence. Limitations may include the variability in nurse-patient interactions and challenges in assessing patient adherence due to self-reporting.

Definitions of Terms

  • Blood Pressure Monitoring Adherence: The consistent practice of checking and recording blood pressure as recommended by healthcare providers.
  • Hypertensive Patients: Individuals diagnosed with high blood pressure (hypertension), often requiring continuous monitoring and treatment to manage the condition.
  • Nurse's Impact: The influence of nurses' interventions, including education, guidance, and support, on patients' health behaviors.
