Background of the Study

Cardiovascular diseases (CVDs) remain the leading cause of mortality worldwide, with smoking being a major modifiable risk factor for heart diseases. Smoking is associated with a range of cardiovascular conditions, including coronary artery disease, heart failure, and stroke (Eze et al., 2023). In Nigeria, smoking-related cardiovascular diseases contribute significantly to the burden of heart disease, with a high incidence of preventable risk factors such as smoking (Adebola et al., 2023). Smoking cessation is considered one of the most effective ways to reduce cardiovascular disease risk and improve overall health outcomes.

Nurses play a pivotal role in smoking cessation programs by offering counseling and providing ongoing support to individuals seeking to quit smoking. The role of nurses in educating patients, reinforcing the benefits of cessation, and supporting behavior change has been demonstrated to improve smoking cessation rates (Oluwole et al., 2024). In Kebbi State, where the prevalence of smoking is rising and cardiovascular disease rates are escalating, the role of smoking cessation counseling by nurses could be critical in improving public health outcomes. However, there is limited research on the effectiveness of smoking cessation counseling provided by nurses in this region and its direct impact on cardiovascular health outcomes.

Studies have shown that smoking cessation programs led by healthcare professionals, including nurses, are associated with improved cardiovascular health, reduced disease progression, and enhanced quality of life (Smith et al., 2023). Nurses' counseling skills, which include motivation, empathy, and personalized interventions, are essential in increasing patients' readiness to quit smoking. Given the rising prevalence of smoking and cardiovascular diseases in Kebbi State, it is important to investigate how smoking cessation counseling by nurses can contribute to improving cardiovascular health outcomes in this region.

Statement of the Problem

Smoking is a major risk factor for cardiovascular diseases in Kebbi State, yet many individuals continue to smoke despite the known health risks. Smoking cessation programs have been shown to be effective in reducing cardiovascular health risks; however, the role of nurses in providing smoking cessation counseling has not been thoroughly explored in Kebbi State. Without a comprehensive understanding of how nurse-led smoking cessation counseling affects cardiovascular health outcomes, it is difficult to design effective interventions to address the rising cardiovascular disease burden. This study aims to examine the impact of smoking cessation counseling provided by nurses on the cardiovascular health outcomes of individuals in Kebbi State.

Objectives of the Study

  1. To evaluate the effectiveness of smoking cessation counseling by nurses on improving cardiovascular health outcomes in Kebbi State.
  2. To assess the knowledge and skills of nurses in providing smoking cessation counseling.
  3. To examine the relationship between smoking cessation counseling and the reduction of smoking-related cardiovascular diseases in Kebbi State.

Research Questions

  1. How effective is smoking cessation counseling by nurses in improving cardiovascular health outcomes in Kebbi State?
  2. What knowledge and skills do nurses in Kebbi State possess regarding smoking cessation counseling?
  3. What is the relationship between smoking cessation counseling by nurses and the reduction of cardiovascular diseases in Kebbi State?

Research Hypotheses

  1. Smoking cessation counseling by nurses significantly improves cardiovascular health outcomes in Kebbi State.
  2. Nurses in Kebbi State have sufficient knowledge and skills to effectively provide smoking cessation counseling.
  3. There is a significant relationship between smoking cessation counseling by nurses and the reduction of smoking-related cardiovascular diseases in Kebbi State.

Scope and Limitations of the Study This study will focus on the role of smoking cessation counseling by nurses in improving cardiovascular health outcomes among individuals in Kebbi State. The research will assess the effectiveness of nurse-led counseling and its impact on smoking behavior and cardiovascular health. However, the study will be limited to specific regions within Kebbi State, and findings may not be generalizable to other parts of Nigeria. The study may also be limited by participant self-reporting on smoking habits and health outcomes, which could introduce bias.

Definitions of Terms

  • Cardiovascular health outcomes: The overall health status related to heart and vascular system, including the reduction in risks associated with heart disease, stroke, and hypertension.
  • Nurses: Registered healthcare professionals who provide direct care and education to patients, including in smoking cessation programs.
  • Kebbi State: A state in Nigeria, where this study will be conducted, addressing the issue of smoking and cardiovascular health among its population.
