Background of the Study

Leadership is an essential skill in nursing practice, as nurses are often required to take on leadership roles in clinical settings, influencing patient care, team dynamics, and organizational practices (Ajayi & Olamide, 2023). Leadership training for nursing students is designed to cultivate essential skills such as decision-making, conflict resolution, communication, and team management, which are necessary for successful nursing practice (Michele & Aliyu, 2024). By engaging in leadership training, nursing students gain the confidence and competence to assume leadership roles in healthcare organizations, ultimately improving patient outcomes and the efficiency of healthcare delivery (Oluwaseun et al., 2023).

At Federal University of Health Sciences, Azare, leadership training is integrated into the nursing curriculum to prepare students for future leadership roles in healthcare settings. However, the influence of leadership training on students' professional development, including their ability to function effectively in leadership positions, is not well understood. This study aims to examine the influence of leadership training on the professional development of nursing students at Federal University of Health Sciences, Azare, and to identify the extent to which leadership training enhances students' leadership skills, confidence, and career preparedness.

Statement of the Problem

While leadership training is a recognized component of nursing education, there is limited research examining its direct impact on the professional development of nursing students, especially in the context of Federal University of Health Sciences, Azare. Without understanding the specific influence of leadership training on nursing students' leadership skills and professional development, it is difficult to evaluate the effectiveness of this training and identify ways to improve it. This study seeks to address this gap by examining the role of leadership training in shaping nursing students' professional growth and their preparedness for leadership roles in healthcare.

3. To propose recommendations for improving leadership training in nursing education to enhance professional development.

Research Questions

1. How does leadership training influence the professional development of nursing students at Federal University of Health Sciences, Azare?

2. What is the impact of leadership training on nursing students' leadership skills and confidence?

3. How can leadership training programs be improved to better support the professional development of nursing students?

Research Hypotheses

1. Leadership training significantly improves the professional development of nursing students at Federal University of Health Sciences, Azare.

2. Nursing students who receive leadership training exhibit higher levels of leadership skills and confidence in clinical settings than those who do not.

3. Enhancing leadership training programs will improve the professional development and leadership abilities of nursing students.

Scope and Limitations of the Study This study will focus on nursing students at Federal University of Health Sciences, Azare, and examine the effects of leadership training on their professional development. Limitations include the reliance on self-reported data and the potential variability in the quality of leadership training received by students.
