Background of the Study
Adolescence is a critical period for the development of cardiovascular health, as lifestyle behaviors established during this time can significantly impact long-term health outcomes (Olumide et al., 2024). Cardiovascular diseases, including hypertension, are increasingly affecting younger populations in Nigeria due to factors such as poor dietary habits, physical inactivity, and increased stress levels (Adegboye et al., 2023). The role of school nurses has become pivotal in addressing these risk factors and promoting heart-healthy behaviors among adolescents.
School nurses are uniquely positioned to intervene in the promotion of cardiovascular health, as they work directly with students and have access to their health information. Interventions may include providing education on healthy eating, the importance of physical activity, stress management, and the prevention of smoking. Research has shown that school-based health programs, including those led by nurses, can be effective in reducing risk factors associated with cardiovascular diseases (Ajayi & Olayemi, 2023). However, there is a gap in understanding the extent to which school nurses in Ogun State are involved in promoting cardiovascular health and how their efforts impact adolescent health outcomes.
This study aims to evaluate the role of school nurses in promoting cardiovascular health among adolescents in Ogun State, examining the effectiveness of their interventions and the barriers they face in encouraging heart-healthy behaviors.
Statement of the Problem
Although school nurses play an essential role in promoting health among adolescents, their specific contributions to cardiovascular health promotion remain underexplored in Ogun State. Given the increasing prevalence of cardiovascular risk factors among young people in Nigeria, there is an urgent need to assess how school nurses are addressing this issue and whether their efforts are effective in preventing the onset of cardiovascular diseases.
