Background of the Study

The rapid rise of cardiovascular diseases (CVDs) globally, including in Nigeria, necessitates the continuous development of healthcare professionals' skills, particularly those in direct patient care such as nurses (Oluwole & Adebayo, 2024). CVDs, which include heart disease, hypertension, stroke, and other heart-related conditions, have become a leading cause of morbidity and mortality worldwide, placing substantial pressure on healthcare systems (Adeyemi & Akinmoladun, 2023). Nurses are integral to the prevention, diagnosis, and management of CVDs due to their direct contact with patients, ability to educate patients, monitor health indicators, and manage treatment plans (Olumide & Abiola, 2024). However, with the fast-paced advancements in medical knowledge and treatment strategies, ongoing professional development is necessary to maintain high standards of care (Ibrahim & Okeke, 2023).

Continuing education (CE) for nurses involves activities that enhance the knowledge, skills, and competencies of healthcare providers beyond their initial qualifications. It is critical to improving the quality of care in specialized fields like cardiovascular nursing, where new evidence-based practices and guidelines emerge regularly (Adedeji & Babajide, 2023). In Oyo State, nurses working in cardiovascular care settings must keep abreast of these advancements to effectively manage the complexities of heart disease (Abdullah et al., 2024). This study seeks to assess the influence of continuing education on nurses' skills in cardiovascular disease management, focusing on the knowledge, attitudes, and practices of nurses in Oyo State.

The findings of this study could provide valuable insights into the importance of structured educational programs in improving cardiovascular care and patient outcomes. Furthermore, it will contribute to evidence on how continuing education can be implemented more effectively within nursing curricula and healthcare facilities.

Statement of the Problem

In Oyo State, nurses’ management skills in cardiovascular disease have been reported as varied, with many healthcare providers still relying on outdated practices due to limited access to continuing education opportunities (Olatunji & Eze, 2023). This lack of regular professional development could be undermining the quality of care provided to patients with CVDs. Although continuing education is known to improve healthcare skills, its influence on the specific cardiovascular disease management practices of nurses in Oyo State has not been thoroughly explored. This study seeks to bridge this gap by assessing how continuing education impacts nurses' abilities to manage cardiovascular diseases effectively.

Objectives of the Study

  1. To assess the influence of continuing education on nurses' cardiovascular disease management skills in Oyo State.
  2. To identify the types of continuing education programs available to nurses in Oyo State.
  3. To evaluate the impact of continuing education on the quality of care provided by nurses to cardiovascular patients in Oyo State.

Research Questions

  1. How does continuing education influence nurses' cardiovascular disease management skills in Oyo State?
  2. What types of continuing education programs are available to nurses working in cardiovascular care settings in Oyo State?
  3. How does continuing education affect the quality of care provided by nurses to cardiovascular patients in Oyo State?

Research Hypotheses

  1. There is a significant positive relationship between continuing education and nurses' skills in cardiovascular disease management in Oyo State.
  2. Nurses who participate in continuing education programs demonstrate higher competency levels in cardiovascular disease management than those who do not.
  3. Continuing education has a significant impact on the quality of cardiovascular care provided by nurses in Oyo State.

Scope and Limitations of the Study This study will focus on nurses working in healthcare facilities in Oyo State, specifically those involved in cardiovascular disease management. The limitations include the potential for a lack of uniformity in the availability and quality of continuing education programs across different healthcare facilities and the reliance on self-reported data from nurses.

Definitions of Terms

  • Continuing education: Educational activities aimed at enhancing the knowledge, skills, and competencies of nurses beyond their initial training, often involving workshops, seminars, or online courses.
  • Cardiovascular disease management: The prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of heart-related conditions, including hypertension, heart attacks, and stroke.
  • Nurses' competency: The ability to effectively perform clinical and administrative tasks, manage patient care, and demonstrate up-to-date knowledge in cardiovascular nursing.
