Background of the Study
Financial constraints are a significant challenge in nursing education, particularly in resource-limited settings. In many institutions, including the Borno State College of Nursing and Midwifery, students may face difficulties in accessing academic resources such as textbooks, journals, research materials, and essential learning tools due to financial limitations (Adeleke & Olamide, 2024). Access to these resources is crucial for students' academic success, as they enable students to deepen their knowledge, engage in independent learning, and stay informed about the latest advancements in healthcare and nursing practice.
In nursing education, where up-to-date information and evidence-based practices are essential, financial constraints can limit students' ability to access essential learning materials (Olumide et al., 2023). Previous studies have shown that financial difficulties can affect students' academic performance, as students who cannot afford academic resources may struggle to complete assignments, conduct research, or prepare for exams effectively (Oluwaseun & Ajayi, 2023).
This study will investigate the influence of financial constraints on nursing students’ access to academic resources at the Borno State College of Nursing and Midwifery. By understanding the challenges students face in acquiring necessary resources, the study aims to provide recommendations for improving resource accessibility and ensuring that students have the materials they need to succeed academically (Michele & Sambo, 2023).
Statement of the Problem
Financial constraints are a major barrier to nursing students’ access to academic resources, which can negatively impact their academic performance and clinical competencies. At Borno State College of Nursing and Midwifery, many students are unable to afford textbooks, online resources, and other essential materials due to financial limitations. These constraints may contribute to gaps in knowledge and hinder students' ability to perform well in their coursework. There is limited research on how financial constraints specifically affect nursing students' access to academic resources in this institution, creating a gap that needs to be addressed.
Objectives of the Study
1. To assess the influence of financial constraints on nursing students' access to academic resources at Borno State College of Nursing and Midwifery.
2. To evaluate the impact of limited access to academic resources on nursing students' academic performance.
3. To propose strategies for improving students' access to academic resources despite financial constraints.
Research Questions
1. How do financial constraints affect nursing students' access to academic resources at Borno State College of Nursing and Midwifery?
2. What is the impact of limited access to academic resources on nursing students' academic performance?
3. What strategies can be implemented to improve access to academic resources for nursing students facing financial constraints?
Research Hypotheses
1. Financial constraints significantly affect nursing students' access to academic resources at Borno State College of Nursing and Midwifery.
2. Limited access to academic resources negatively impacts nursing students' academic performance.
3. Implementing strategies to reduce financial barriers will improve nursing students' access to academic resources.
Scope and Limitations of the Study This study will focus on nursing students at Borno State College of Nursing and Midwifery. It will assess how financial constraints affect access to academic resources and academic performance. One limitation is that the study will not examine the broader socio-economic factors that may also influence students' access to resources.
