Background of the Study

Research skills are essential in nursing education, as they enable students to critically evaluate evidence, contribute to the development of nursing knowledge, and engage in evidence-based practice (Abubakar et al., 2023). In the University of Jos College of Health Sciences, research is an integral part of the nursing curriculum, but students often struggle with conducting independent research due to inadequate training in research methodology, data analysis, and scholarly writing (Olajide et al., 2023). The importance of research skills training in developing these competencies cannot be overstated, as it prepares students to tackle clinical problems, conduct studies, and contribute to advancements in nursing practice (Michele & Sambo, 2024).

Research skills training encompasses a range of competencies, including literature review, data collection, data analysis, and the ability to interpret and report research findings (Oluwatoyin et al., 2024). In the context of nursing education, these skills are particularly crucial because they support the ability to conduct systematic investigations into patient care practices, healthcare systems, and nursing interventions. Previous studies have suggested that a lack of adequate research skills training may limit nursing students’ capacity to conduct independent research and critically analyze clinical problems (Adeleke & Aliyu, 2023).

This study aims to assess the impact of research skills training on nursing students' ability to conduct independent research at the University of Jos College of Health Sciences. By examining the relationship between research skills training and students' research abilities, the study will provide insights into how best to equip nursing students with the necessary skills for independent research and evidence-based practice (Olamide & Tunde, 2023).

Statement of the Problem

While nursing education increasingly emphasizes the importance of research, many nursing students at the University of Jos College of Health Sciences have not received adequate training in research methodologies, leading to difficulties in conducting independent studies. A lack of research skills can hinder students’ ability to engage in evidence-based practice, limiting their potential to contribute to the improvement of healthcare services. Despite the apparent importance of research skills, there is limited empirical evidence on the effectiveness of research skills training in nursing education. This study seeks to assess the impact of research skills training on nursing students' research abilities at the University of Jos College of Health Sciences.

Objectives of the Study

1. To assess the level of research skills training provided to nursing students at the University of Jos College of Health Sciences.

2. To evaluate the impact of research skills training on nursing students' ability to conduct independent research.

3. To propose recommendations for enhancing research skills training in the nursing curriculum.

Research Questions

1. What is the level of research skills training provided to nursing students at the University of Jos College of Health Sciences?

2. How does research skills training impact nursing students' ability to conduct independent research?

3. What strategies can be implemented to improve research skills training for nursing students?

Research Hypotheses

1. Research skills training positively impacts nursing students' ability to conduct independent research.

2. Nursing students who receive research skills training will perform better in conducting independent research compared to those who do not.

3. Enhancing research skills training will significantly improve nursing students' ability to conduct independent research.

Scope and Limitations of the Study This study will focus on nursing students at the University of Jos College of Health Sciences. It will assess the effectiveness of research skills training as part of the nursing curriculum. One limitation of the study is that it will not consider external factors such as access to research resources or mentorship that may also influence students' ability to conduct research.

Definitions of Terms

• Research Skills Training: The process of teaching students the necessary skills for conducting research, including data collection, analysis, and interpretation (Olajide et al., 2023).

• Independent Research: Research conducted by students with minimal supervision, aimed at answering specific clinical or academic questions (Olamide & Tunde, 2023).

• Evidence-Based Practice: A clinical decision-making approach that integrates the best available research evidence with clinical expertise and patient preferences (Adeleke & Aliyu, 2023).
