Background of the Study
Career specialization is an important aspect of nursing education, as it allows nurses to focus on specific areas of practice that align with their interests, skills, and professional aspirations. Specialization enhances nurses' expertise, contributing to the overall improvement of patient care quality. However, choosing a nursing specialization can be influenced by a range of factors, including personal interests, societal needs, economic considerations, and the availability of opportunities within healthcare institutions (O’Connor et al., 2024).
Nursing students' decisions regarding career specialization are shaped by various influences, such as the exposure they receive during clinical placements, mentorship, and the perceived job market demand in different specialties. In some contexts, nursing students may gravitate towards specializations that offer better financial rewards or career stability, while others may prioritize areas where they can make a significant impact on patient outcomes. Understanding the factors that guide specialization choices among nursing students is crucial for nursing education institutions to tailor their curricula and provide adequate support to students in making informed career decisions (Stewart et al., 2025).
Delta State University Teaching Hospital, located in southern Nigeria, serves as a significant clinical training site for nursing students. However, there is limited research on what drives nursing students' career specialization choices within this institution. This study aims to assess the factors influencing career specialization decisions among nursing students at Delta State University Teaching Hospital, with the goal of identifying key drivers that impact career decisions in the field of nursing.
Statement of the Problem
While career specialization is a significant part of professional development in nursing, there is a lack of understanding about the factors influencing specialization choices among nursing students at Delta State University Teaching Hospital. Identifying these factors is crucial, as it can help inform policies and educational strategies that support students in making informed career choices. Without this insight, nursing students may not be adequately prepared to select specializations that align with both their personal interests and the healthcare system's needs.

1. To assess the factors influencing career specialization choices among nursing students at Delta State University Teaching Hospital.
2. To determine the most preferred nursing specializations among nursing students at Delta State University Teaching Hospital.
3. To evaluate the role of mentorship, clinical exposure, and institutional support in shaping career specialization choices.
Research Questions
1. What are the main factors influencing career specialization choices among nursing students at Delta State University Teaching Hospital?
2. What are the most preferred nursing specializations among nursing students at Delta State University Teaching Hospital?
3. How do mentorship, clinical exposure, and institutional support impact career specialization decisions among nursing students?
Research Hypotheses
1. Factors such as personal interests, job market demand, and financial incentives significantly influence career specialization choices among nursing students at Delta State University Teaching Hospital.
2. Nursing students at Delta State University Teaching Hospital show a preference for specializations with better career prospects and financial rewards.
3. Mentorship, clinical exposure, and institutional support positively influence nursing students’ decisions regarding career specialization.
Scope and Limitations of the Study
The study will focus on nursing students at Delta State University Teaching Hospital and assess the factors that influence their career specialization choices. The study will be limited by the scope of the institution, with findings potentially not generalizable to other universities or healthcare facilities. Additionally, limitations may arise from the self-reported nature of the data and the potential for biases in the responses of students.
