Background of the Study
Motivation plays a significant role in shaping students’ academic performance. In nursing education, motivation influences students' engagement with the learning process, persistence in overcoming academic challenges, and commitment to achieving their professional goals (Madiha et al., 2023). Motivated students tend to demonstrate higher levels of enthusiasm, effort, and concentration in their academic tasks, which ultimately leads to better performance (Nwankwo & Sulaimon, 2024). In contrast, a lack of motivation can contribute to academic disengagement, poor performance, and increased dropout rates.
At University of Uyo Teaching Hospital, nursing students face a variety of academic pressures, including complex coursework, clinical training, and examinations. The level of motivation among these students may have a substantial impact on their academic success. Understanding the factors that motivate nursing students and how these influences contribute to their academic performance is critical for designing strategies that promote a more engaged and high-performing student body. This study aims to evaluate the role of motivation in shaping the academic performance of nursing students at University of Uyo Teaching Hospital.
Statement of the Problem
Despite the growing recognition of motivation as a key factor in academic performance, there is limited research on its specific role in nursing education at the University of Uyo Teaching Hospital. Nursing students at the institution face significant academic challenges that may be influenced by varying levels of motivation. However, it is unclear how motivation affects their performance in both theoretical and clinical components of their education. Without a deeper understanding of how motivation influences student success, educators and administrators may struggle to implement effective strategies to improve academic outcomes.
Objectives of the Study
1. To evaluate the impact of motivation on nursing students’ academic performance at University of Uyo Teaching Hospital.
2. To identify the motivational factors that influence nursing students’ academic engagement and success.
3. To explore the relationship between different types of motivation (intrinsic and extrinsic) and students' academic outcomes.
Research Questions
1. What is the role of motivation in determining nursing students’ academic performance at University of Uyo Teaching Hospital?
2. What motivational factors are most influential in shaping nursing students' academic engagement and success?
3. How do intrinsic and extrinsic motivation contribute to nursing students' academic outcomes?
Research Hypotheses
1. Motivation has a significant positive impact on nursing students’ academic performance at University of Uyo Teaching Hospital.
2. Intrinsic motivation is more strongly correlated with academic success than extrinsic motivation among nursing students.
3. Students who are highly motivated exhibit higher academic engagement and better performance in nursing education compared to those with low motivation.
Scope and Limitations of the Study
This study will focus on nursing students at University of Uyo Teaching Hospital and assess the relationship between motivation and their academic performance. The study will be limited to examining motivation in the context of academic performance and may not consider other factors such as personal or social influences. Additionally, findings may not be generalized to other institutions or nursing programs outside the University of Uyo.

• Motivation: The internal drive or external factors that prompt individuals to pursue goals, such as academic success.
• Academic Performance: The level of success a student achieves in their academic activities, including grades, participation, and clinical competencies.
• Intrinsic Motivation: Motivation driven by internal factors, such as personal satisfaction and the desire for self-improvement.
• Extrinsic Motivation: Motivation driven by external factors, such as rewards, grades, or recognition.
• Nursing Students: Individuals enrolled in the nursing program at University of Uyo Teaching Hospital.
