Background of the Study

Telemedicine has emerged as a critical tool in modern healthcare, particularly in regions where access to specialized care is limited due to geographical, economic, or infrastructural barriers (Umar et al., 2024). In Ogun State, as in many parts of Nigeria, cardiovascular diseases (CVDs) are a leading cause of morbidity and mortality, but access to specialized cardiac care remains a challenge due to the scarcity of specialized healthcare providers, long wait times, and limited healthcare infrastructure (Olowookere et al., 2023). Telemedicine offers a potential solution by enabling healthcare professionals, including cardiac nurses, to provide care remotely through digital platforms, enhancing access to healthcare services and improving patient outcomes (Oluwaseun & Adesina, 2023).

Cardiac nurses, who are essential in monitoring patients, providing education, and ensuring compliance with treatment regimens, can benefit significantly from telemedicine. By using telehealth platforms, they can follow up with patients, provide consultations, and offer advice regarding medication adherence, lifestyle changes, and post-treatment care (Salami et al., 2024). While telemedicine has been implemented in various healthcare settings in Nigeria, its role in cardiac nursing care has not been extensively studied, particularly in Ogun State. Therefore, understanding how telemedicine can be integrated into cardiac nursing practices and the barriers to its full adoption is critical for improving cardiac care delivery.

This study seeks to investigate the role of telemedicine in enhancing cardiac nursing care in Ogun State, assessing its effectiveness, challenges, and potential for expansion within the local healthcare context.

Statement of the Problem

The shortage of specialized cardiac care providers in Ogun State has led to limited access to high-quality cardiac care for many patients (Olowookere et al., 2024). Telemedicine presents an opportunity to bridge this gap by allowing cardiac nurses to remotely monitor patients, provide consultations, and facilitate timely interventions. However, there is limited research on the actual role and impact of telemedicine in cardiac nursing care in Ogun State, and the barriers to its adoption remain unclear (Fadare & Adesina, 2023). This study aims to address this gap by investigating how telemedicine is utilized in cardiac nursing care and identifying the challenges and opportunities associated with its implementation.

Objectives of the Study

1. To investigate the role of telemedicine in enhancing cardiac nursing care in Ogun State.

2. To assess the challenges and barriers to the adoption of telemedicine in cardiac nursing care.

3. To evaluate the effectiveness of telemedicine in improving patient outcomes in cardiac nursing care.

Research Questions

1. How is telemedicine used to enhance cardiac nursing care in Ogun State?

2. What are the challenges and barriers to implementing telemedicine in cardiac nursing care?

3. How effective is telemedicine in improving patient outcomes in cardiac care?

Research Hypotheses

1. Telemedicine significantly improves patient outcomes in cardiac nursing care in Ogun State.

2. The adoption of telemedicine in cardiac nursing care is limited by infrastructural and technical challenges.

3. Cardiac nurses who use telemedicine platforms report higher levels of patient satisfaction and adherence to treatment.

Scope and Limitations of the Study

This study will focus on cardiac nurses in Ogun State and evaluate the role of telemedicine in enhancing their care practices. It will be limited to healthcare facilities that have implemented telemedicine for cardiac care. Limitations include the availability of adequate infrastructure and the potential biases in nurse-reported data regarding telemedicine use.

Definitions of Terms

1. Telemedicine: The use of digital platforms to provide remote healthcare services, including consultations, monitoring, and education.

2. Cardiac Nursing Care: The care provided by nurses to patients with heart-related conditions, including prevention, education, monitoring, and post-treatment care.

3. Patient Outcomes: The results or changes in a patient's health status, including improvements in symptoms, quality of life, and recovery rates.
