Background of the Study

Nursing has traditionally been a female-dominated profession, but there has been a steady increase in male participation in recent years. However, male nurses still represent a minority within the profession, particularly in African contexts (Adesanya & Abimbola, 2023). The factors that influence male students to choose nursing as a career are varied and include societal perceptions, career expectations, financial incentives, and personal interests (Sanni et al., 2024). Understanding the specific motivations behind male students' choice to enter nursing can help address barriers to gender diversity in nursing and promote more inclusive policies within nursing education (Alabi et al., 2023).

At Bauchi State College of Nursing and Midwifery, male students may face unique challenges when considering a career in nursing, from societal stereotypes to workplace discrimination. Investigating the factors influencing the choice of nursing as a career among male students can provide valuable insights for nursing programs to attract and retain more male students and create a more gender-inclusive environment.

Statement of the Problem

Despite the growing number of male students entering nursing programs, nursing remains a predominantly female profession, and male students may face unique challenges that impact their decision to choose nursing as a career. At Bauchi State College of Nursing and Midwifery, the factors influencing male students' choice of nursing as a career have not been thoroughly examined. Understanding these factors is essential for addressing gender imbalances in the profession and developing strategies to encourage more male students to pursue nursing.

Objectives of the Study

1. To identify the factors influencing male students' choice of nursing as a career at Bauchi State College of Nursing and Midwifery.

2. To examine the role of societal perceptions and stereotypes in shaping male students' career choice.

3. To explore the personal, educational, and financial factors that affect male students' decision to pursue a career in nursing.

Research Questions

1. What factors influence male students' decision to choose nursing as a career at Bauchi State College of Nursing and Midwifery?

2. How do societal perceptions and stereotypes impact male students' choice of nursing as a career?

3. What role do personal, educational, and financial factors play in shaping male students’ decision to pursue nursing?

Research Hypotheses

1. Societal perceptions and stereotypes have a significant impact on male students' decision to pursue nursing as a career.

2. Personal interests, educational background, and financial incentives positively influence male students’ choice to study nursing.

3. The decision to pursue nursing as a career is influenced by male students' perception of gender roles in the profession.

Scope and Limitations of the Study

This study will focus on male nursing students at Bauchi State College of Nursing and Midwifery and will investigate the factors that influence their choice of nursing as a career. The study will not include female students or consider other nursing programs outside Bauchi State. The findings may not be generalizable to other institutions or regions.
