Background of the Study
Cardiovascular diseases (CVD) are a leading cause of morbidity and mortality globally, and postpartum women are particularly vulnerable due to the physiological changes that occur during pregnancy and childbirth. Risk factors such as hypertension, diabetes, obesity, and hyperlipidemia are prevalent among postpartum women and significantly increase the risk of developing CVD later in life (Aliyu et al., 2023). Managing these risk factors in the postpartum period is essential to preventing long-term cardiovascular complications. Nurses play a critical role in identifying, monitoring, and managing these risk factors by providing education, promoting lifestyle changes, and assisting in the management of comorbid conditions (Salihu et al., 2023).
In Sokoto State, as in many rural areas of Nigeria, there is a growing burden of cardiovascular diseases, and postpartum care programs have often focused more on immediate maternal health rather than long-term cardiovascular risk prevention. Nurses working in maternal and child health settings are in a prime position to influence the cardiovascular health of postpartum women, yet research on their involvement in managing CVD risk factors in this population is scarce. This study will explore the role of nurses in managing cardiovascular disease risk factors among postpartum women in Sokoto State, focusing on their knowledge, practices, and challenges in promoting heart health during the postpartum period.
Statement of the Problem
Cardiovascular disease risk factors such as hypertension, obesity, and diabetes are often undiagnosed or poorly managed in postpartum women, putting them at increased risk of long-term cardiovascular complications. Nurses, who are integral to postpartum care, play a vital role in managing these risk factors. However, little is known about how nurses in Sokoto State are involved in managing cardiovascular disease risk factors in postpartum women. This study seeks to examine the extent of nurses' involvement, their practices, and the challenges they face in addressing these risk factors.
Objectives of the Study
1. To assess the level of nurses' involvement in managing cardiovascular disease risk factors among postpartum women in Sokoto State.
2. To identify the strategies used by nurses to manage cardiovascular risk factors in postpartum women.
3. To explore the challenges faced by nurses in managing cardiovascular risk factors in postpartum women in Sokoto State.
Research Questions
1. What is the level of nurses’ involvement in managing cardiovascular disease risk factors in postpartum women in Sokoto State?
2. What strategies do nurses employ to manage cardiovascular disease risk factors in postpartum women?
3. What challenges do nurses face in managing cardiovascular disease risk factors in postpartum women in Sokoto State?
Research Hypotheses
1. Nurses in Sokoto State are significantly involved in managing cardiovascular disease risk factors in postpartum women.
2. The strategies employed by nurses significantly contribute to the management of cardiovascular disease risk factors in postpartum women.
3. Nurses face significant challenges in managing cardiovascular disease risk factors in postpartum women in Sokoto State.
Scope and Limitations of the Study
This study will focus on nurses working in maternal health settings in Sokoto State, examining their involvement in managing cardiovascular disease risk factors in postpartum women. Limitations include the potential variability in practices across different healthcare facilities and the cross-sectional nature of the study.
Definitions of Terms
1. Cardiovascular Disease Risk Factors: Factors that increase the likelihood of developing cardiovascular diseases, such as hypertension, obesity, diabetes, and hyperlipidemia.
2. Postpartum Period: The period following childbirth, during which a woman’s body undergoes physical recovery and adjustment.
3. Nurses' Involvement: The active role that nurses play in assessing, monitoring, and managing health conditions, including cardiovascular disease risk factors.
