Background of the Study
Assessment plays a crucial role in determining the effectiveness of educational programs, particularly in nursing education. Traditional assessment methods, such as exams and quizzes, are commonly used to measure students' knowledge and understanding of nursing concepts. However, there is an increasing interest in alternative assessment strategies, such as competency-based assessments, portfolios, peer assessments, and practical clinical evaluations (Rosen et al., 2023). These newer methods aim to provide a more holistic and comprehensive evaluation of nursing students' abilities, extending beyond theoretical knowledge to include practical skills and critical thinking.
At Ekiti State University Teaching Hospital (ESUTH), where nursing students undergo both classroom and clinical training, the assessment methods employed can significantly impact students' academic success. While traditional exams assess cognitive understanding, they may not adequately reflect a student's clinical competence or ability to apply knowledge in real-world settings (Heim et al., 2023). The use of diverse assessment methods, including formative assessments, objective structured clinical examinations (OSCEs), and reflective practice, can provide a more accurate picture of a nursing student's overall academic achievement and readiness for practice (Lynch et al., 2024). Despite the potential benefits of various assessment techniques, there is limited research on how these methods impact the academic success of nursing students at ESUTH. This study aims to evaluate the effectiveness of different assessment methods in enhancing nursing students' academic success at Ekiti State University Teaching Hospital.
Statement of the Problem
Nursing education programs at Ekiti State University Teaching Hospital primarily rely on traditional assessment methods such as written exams and practical tests. While these assessments measure certain aspects of students' abilities, they may not comprehensively capture the full range of competencies required for successful nursing practice. This study seeks to investigate the impact of diverse assessment methods, including both traditional and alternative strategies, on the academic success of nursing students at ESUTH, with the goal of identifying effective assessment practices that can enhance student learning and success.
Objectives of the Study
1. To examine the impact of different assessment methods on the academic success of nursing students at Ekiti State University Teaching Hospital.
2. To identify the most effective assessment methods for evaluating nursing students' academic performance and clinical competencies.
3. To explore the relationship between assessment methods and nursing students' preparedness for practice at ESUTH.
Research Questions
1. How do different assessment methods impact nursing students' academic success at Ekiti State University Teaching Hospital?

Research Hypotheses
1. Nursing students assessed through diverse methods (e.g., OSCEs, portfolios) experience greater academic success than those assessed through traditional written exams alone.
2. There is a significant relationship between alternative assessment methods and nursing students' clinical competencies at Ekiti State University Teaching Hospital.
3. The use of comprehensive assessment strategies improves nursing students' preparedness for clinical practice at ESUTH.
Scope and Limitations of the Study
This study will focus on nursing students at Ekiti State University Teaching Hospital who are currently undergoing training and assessment in their nursing programs. The study will explore how different assessment methods influence academic success, clinical competence, and overall preparedness for nursing practice. Limitations include potential biases in students' self-reported experiences of assessment and challenges in quantifying clinical competencies.
