Background of the Study

The pervasive use of social media has significantly influenced various aspects of daily life, including education. Nursing students, like other university students, are active users of social media platforms such as Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and WhatsApp. These platforms are used for social interaction, information sharing, and academic collaboration (Nguyen et al., 2023). However, there is growing concern that excessive social media use may negatively impact students' academic performance, particularly by reducing their concentration levels and distracting them from their studies (Seli et al., 2024).

In the context of nursing education, where concentration, focus, and attention to detail are crucial for both theoretical and clinical learning, it is important to assess the effect of social media on students' academic concentration. At Kwara State University, nursing students spend a significant amount of time on social media, whether for social engagement or academic purposes. However, there is limited research on how this usage affects their ability to concentrate on their studies. Some studies suggest that while social media can be a source of academic support, it may also serve as a distraction, leading to procrastination and decreased academic performance (Almeida et al., 2023). This study will investigate the effect of social media use on the academic concentration of nursing students at Kwara State University, aiming to understand the relationship between social media usage patterns and academic focus.

Statement of the Problem

Despite the potential benefits of social media for academic collaboration and communication, its overuse has been associated with negative effects on academic concentration and performance. At Kwara State University, where nursing students are required to master complex theoretical and clinical content, it is unclear how social media use influences their academic concentration. This study aims to examine whether social media contributes to reduced academic concentration, potentially impacting students’ learning outcomes.

Objectives of the Study

1. To assess the effect of social media usage on the academic concentration of nursing students at Kwara State University.

2. To identify the relationship between time spent on social media and students’ academic concentration levels.

3. To explore nursing students' perceptions of the impact of social media on their academic performance and concentration.

Research Questions

1. How does social media usage affect the academic concentration of nursing students at Kwara State University?

2. What is the relationship between the amount of time spent on social media and academic concentration among nursing students?

3. How do nursing students perceive the influence of social media on their academic performance?

Research Hypotheses

1. Nursing students who spend more time on social media will exhibit lower levels of academic concentration compared to those who spend less time on social media.

2. There is a significant negative relationship between social media use and the academic concentration of nursing students at Kwara State University.

3. Nursing students who engage in social media for academic purposes will report higher academic concentration compared to those who use it primarily for social interaction.

Scope and Limitations of the Study

This study will focus on nursing students at Kwara State University, specifically examining the impact of social media use on their academic concentration. The study will assess both the positive and negative effects of social media and explore students' perceptions of its impact on their learning. Limitations include the possibility of students underreporting their social media use and the difficulty of distinguishing between the academic and social uses of social media.

Definitions of Terms

1. Social Media: Online platforms that facilitate social interaction, information sharing, and content creation, including Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and WhatsApp.

2. Academic Concentration: The ability to focus on academic tasks, such as studying, attending lectures, and completing assignments, without being distracted by external factors.

3. Academic Performance: The extent to which a student succeeds in their academic pursuits, usually evaluated through grades, assignments, and examinations.
