Background of the Study

Part-time work has become increasingly popular among university students, including nursing students, as a way to support their financial needs while pursuing their education (Bryant & Majors, 2024). For nursing students, balancing academic responsibilities with part-time employment presents both opportunities and challenges. On the one hand, part-time jobs provide valuable work experience and financial independence, while on the other hand, they can potentially affect academic performance due to time constraints, stress, and fatigue (Umar et al., 2023). In nursing programs, which demand significant clinical hours, theoretical study, and practical skills acquisition, the additional stressors of part-time employment can result in either positive or negative outcomes.

At Imo State University Teaching Hospital, many nursing students engage in part-time work in various sectors, such as healthcare, retail, or tutoring. Given the rigorous demands of nursing education, it is important to understand how part-time work impacts their academic performance. Studies have shown that while part-time work may offer some financial relief, it can also lead to decreased study time, poor academic performance, and increased levels of anxiety and stress among students (Stewart & Lanza, 2023). Furthermore, nursing students are expected to develop both theoretical knowledge and clinical expertise, which can be compromised if part-time work interferes with their studies. This study will examine the impact of part-time work on the academic performance of nursing students at Imo State University Teaching Hospital, identifying the extent to which work commitments affect their learning outcomes.

Statement of the Problem

While part-time work offers financial benefits to nursing students, there is limited research on its direct impact on their academic performance, particularly in the context of Imo State University Teaching Hospital. This study will investigate whether part-time work contributes to higher levels of stress, reduces academic focus, or results in poor academic performance, despite the financial benefits that students may gain.

Objectives of the Study

1. To determine the impact of part-time work on the academic performance of nursing students at Imo State University Teaching Hospital.

2. To explore the relationship between the number of hours spent working part-time and students’ academic outcomes.

3. To identify coping strategies employed by nursing students to manage part-time work and academic responsibilities.

Research Questions

1. How does part-time work affect the academic performance of nursing students at Imo State University Teaching Hospital?

2. What is the relationship between the number of hours spent on part-time work and the academic performance of nursing students?

3. What strategies do nursing students use to balance part-time work with their academic responsibilities?

Research Hypotheses

1. Nursing students who engage in part-time work will have lower academic performance compared to those who do not work part-time.

2. There is a negative correlation between the number of hours spent on part-time work and nursing students' academic performance.

3. Nursing students who use effective time management and coping strategies will experience less negative impact on their academic performance from part-time work.

Scope and Limitations of the Study

This study will focus on nursing students at Imo State University Teaching Hospital who engage in part-time work. The study will assess the academic performance of students with different work-hour commitments and explore the coping mechanisms they use. Limitations include the self-reporting nature of data collection, which may be biased, and the influence of external factors, such as personal circumstances, that might also affect academic performance.

1. Part-Time Work: Employment that involves working fewer hours than a full-time job, typically ranging from a few hours per week to a maximum of 20 hours.

2. Academic Performance: The level of success a student achieves in their academic activities, typically measured by grades, assessments, and overall academic progress.

3. Coping Strategies: Techniques or methods employed by students to manage stress, time constraints, and other challenges associated with balancing work and academic responsibilities.
