Background of the Study
Early detection of heart diseases is crucial for improving patient outcomes and reducing mortality. Electrocardiography (ECG) screening is a widely recognized diagnostic tool for identifying heart conditions such as arrhythmias, ischemic heart disease, and other cardiovascular abnormalities (Nwosu et al., 2024). In many settings, nurses are often the first point of contact for patients and can play a vital role in the early detection of heart diseases by conducting ECG screenings. In Edo State, the role of nurses in ECG screening for heart disease detection is gaining increasing attention, as heart disease remains a leading cause of morbidity and mortality in Nigeria (Akinmoladun et al., 2023).

ECG screening, when carried out effectively, can detect heart conditions before symptoms become severe, enabling timely intervention and potentially saving lives (Adeboye et al., 2023). However, the effectiveness of nurse-led ECG screening in Edo State remains under-explored. Factors such as training, resources, and access to technology may influence the quality of ECG screenings conducted by nurses, and their ability to interpret results can directly affect early diagnosis and treatment outcomes (Ogunlaja et al., 2023). This study aims to assess the effectiveness of nurse-led ECG screening in the early detection of heart diseases, focusing on the practices and outcomes in Edo State.

Statement of the Problem
Cardiovascular diseases continue to be a leading health concern in Nigeria, and early detection is critical for managing these diseases effectively. Nurse-led ECG screenings have the potential to improve early diagnosis, but there is limited evidence on their effectiveness in Edo State. While nurses are trained to conduct ECGs, the lack of comprehensive data on the impact of these screenings on early heart disease detection raises concerns about their true effectiveness. Understanding the effectiveness of nurse-led ECG screenings in Edo State is essential to optimizing cardiovascular care and improving health outcomes.

Objectives of the Study

1. To assess the effectiveness of nurse-led ECG screening in detecting heart diseases in Edo State.

2. To examine the factors that influence the effectiveness of nurse-led ECG screening in the early detection of heart diseases.

3. To evaluate the impact of nurse-led ECG screening on early diagnosis and patient outcomes in Edo State.

Research Questions

1. How effective is nurse-led ECG screening in detecting heart diseases in Edo State?

2. What factors influence the effectiveness of nurse-led ECG screening in early detection?

3. What impact does nurse-led ECG screening have on early diagnosis and patient outcomes in Edo State?

Research Hypotheses

1. Nurse-led ECG screening is not significantly effective in detecting heart diseases in Edo State.

2. The factors influencing the effectiveness of nurse-led ECG screening do not significantly impact the early detection of heart diseases.

3. Nurse-led ECG screening does not significantly improve early diagnosis and patient outcomes in Edo State.

Scope and Limitations of the Study
The study will focus on hospitals and clinics in Edo State, specifically those that have implemented nurse-led ECG screening programs. Limitations include the potential for a small sample size due to the limited number of facilities offering nurse-led ECG screening and the challenge of obtaining consistent follow-up data to assess long-term outcomes.

Definitions of Terms

• ECG Screening: The process of using electrocardiography to detect heart conditions, such as arrhythmias and ischemic heart disease, often before symptoms become apparent.

• Nurse-Led: Referring to healthcare services or interventions led by nurses, typically involving independent assessment, diagnosis, and treatment.

• Heart Diseases: A broad range of cardiovascular conditions, including coronary artery disease, heart failure, arrhythmias, and valvular diseases.
