Background of the Study
Obesity is a major risk factor for the development of cardiovascular diseases (CVD), and its prevalence is steadily increasing in Nigeria (Ajala et al., 2023). Weight management programs, particularly those led by trained nurses, can help individuals control their weight, reduce their risk of developing heart disease, and improve overall health (Ogunfowora et al., 2024). In Oyo State, where the burden of cardiovascular diseases is growing, the role of nurses in leading weight management programs is critical. Nurses are well-positioned to provide education, support, and motivation to individuals at risk for CVD by guiding them through lifestyle changes such as dietary modification and physical activity (Adedeji et al., 2023).

While nurse-led weight management programs are gaining popularity globally, there is limited research on their impact in Nigerian settings, particularly with respect to cardiovascular health outcomes. This study seeks to evaluate the effectiveness of nurse-led weight management programs in Oyo State and examine their impact on cardiovascular health indicators, such as blood pressure, cholesterol levels, and physical fitness.

Statement of the Problem
Although weight management programs have been identified as an important intervention in preventing and managing cardiovascular diseases, there is limited evidence on the role of nurses in leading such programs in Nigeria. It remains unclear how effective these programs are in improving cardiovascular health in Nigerian populations, particularly in Oyo State. Understanding the impact of nurse-led weight management programs will help optimize strategies to address the growing burden of obesity-related cardiovascular diseases in the region.

Objectives of the Study

1. To examine the impact of nurse-led weight management programs on cardiovascular health in Oyo State.

2. To evaluate changes in cardiovascular risk factors (e.g., blood pressure, cholesterol) in participants of nurse-led weight management programs.

3. To identify challenges faced by nurses in delivering effective weight management programs for cardiovascular health.

Research Questions

1. What impact do nurse-led weight management programs have on cardiovascular health in Oyo State?

2. How do nurse-led weight management programs influence cardiovascular risk factors such as blood pressure and cholesterol?

3. What challenges do nurses encounter in delivering weight management programs for cardiovascular health?

Research Hypotheses

1. Nurse-led weight management programs do not significantly improve cardiovascular health in participants in Oyo State.

2. There is no significant reduction in cardiovascular risk factors such as blood pressure and cholesterol following participation in nurse-led weight management programs.

3. Challenges faced by nurses significantly impact the effectiveness of weight management programs for cardiovascular health.

Scope and Limitations of the Study
The study will focus on individuals enrolled in nurse-led weight management programs in Oyo State. Limitations may include the variability in participant adherence, differences in nurses’ experience and training, and the difficulty in measuring long-term cardiovascular outcomes.

Definitions of Terms

• Weight Management Programs: Structured interventions aimed at helping individuals lose weight, maintain a healthy weight, and reduce the risk of obesity-related diseases.

• Cardiovascular Health: The condition of the heart and blood vessels, which can be influenced by factors such as blood pressure, cholesterol levels, and body mass index.

• Nurse-Led Programs: Healthcare programs where nurses take a central role in planning, implementing, and evaluating patient care.
