Background of the Study
Myocardial infarction (MI), commonly known as a heart attack, is one of the most prevalent and serious cardiovascular events worldwide. Recovery from MI requires comprehensive management, including physical rehabilitation, emotional support, and education on lifestyle modifications (Adebayo et al., 2024). Patient-centered nursing care, which focuses on the individual needs, preferences, and values of patients, has been shown to improve health outcomes, especially in chronic conditions such as cardiovascular disease (Oni et al., 2023).
In Cross River State, where the burden of cardiovascular diseases is increasing, the role of nursing care in post-MI recovery is critical. Patient-centered care approaches that involve active patient participation, emotional support, and tailored care plans have the potential to accelerate recovery and reduce the risk of future cardiovascular events (Olawale et al., 2023). This study aims to investigate the impact of patient-centered nursing care on the recovery process of MI patients in Cross River State, focusing on their physical, emotional, and social well-being during the recovery phase.
Statement of the Problem
Although patient-centered care has been advocated for in improving health outcomes, particularly in the recovery from myocardial infarction, the extent of its impact on MI patients in Nigeria remains insufficiently studied. Nurses, as primary caregivers, play a significant role in delivering patient-centered care, but there is a lack of research on how this care approach affects recovery from MI in the context of Cross River State. Without a clear understanding of the impact of patient-centered care, it is difficult to optimize nursing practices and improve post-MI recovery outcomes.
Objectives of the Study
1. To examine the impact of patient-centered nursing care on the physical recovery of myocardial infarction patients in Cross River State.
2. To assess the emotional well-being of myocardial infarction patients receiving patient-centered nursing care.
3. To evaluate the role of patient-centered care in improving social support and lifestyle changes among myocardial infarction patients in Cross River State.
Research Questions
1. How does patient-centered nursing care impact the physical recovery of myocardial infarction patients in Cross River State?
2. What effect does patient-centered nursing care have on the emotional well-being of myocardial infarction patients in Cross River State?
3. How does patient-centered nursing care influence social support and lifestyle changes in myocardial infarction patients in Cross River State?
Research Hypotheses
1. Patient-centered nursing care does not significantly improve the physical recovery of myocardial infarction patients in Cross River State.
2. There is no significant effect of patient-centered nursing care on the emotional well-being of myocardial infarction patients in Cross River State.
3. Patient-centered nursing care does not significantly enhance social support and lifestyle changes among myocardial infarction patients in Cross River State.
Scope and Limitations of the Study
The study will focus on myocardial infarction patients in Cross River State and assess the impact of patient-centered nursing care on their recovery. Limitations may include the challenges of measuring emotional and social outcomes and the variability of nursing practices across different healthcare settings.
