Background of the Study
Nurse educators play a pivotal role in shaping the clinical competencies of nursing students, as they are directly responsible for providing guidance, mentorship, and instruction in both classroom and clinical environments. Clinical competencies, which encompass the practical skills required to deliver safe and effective patient care, are crucial for ensuring that nursing graduates are well-prepared to meet the demands of the healthcare system. At Benue State University College of Health Sciences, nurse educators are integral to the education and training of nursing students, yet their influence on students' clinical abilities requires further exploration. Nurse educators not only impart theoretical knowledge but also serve as role models, facilitators, and evaluators in clinical settings. Their ability to effectively bridge the gap between academic knowledge and practical application can significantly enhance the clinical skills of nursing students (Brown & Graves, 2024).
The evolving healthcare landscape, marked by rapid advancements in medical technology and patient care practices, necessitates that nursing students develop a high level of clinical competence. Nurse educators are expected to stay abreast of these changes and incorporate them into their teaching strategies. However, challenges such as resource constraints, limited clinical placements, and varying levels of student preparedness can impede their efforts. Research has shown that the quality of nurse educators’ teaching, their approach to mentorship, and their capacity to foster critical thinking in clinical settings can directly influence the clinical competencies of nursing students (Jackson & Lee, 2023).
At Benue State University College of Health Sciences, it is essential to evaluate how nurse educators are contributing to the development of students’ clinical competencies. Understanding the strategies they employ, the barriers they face, and the impact they have on student learning outcomes is critical for improving the overall quality of nursing education. This study aims to assess the role of nurse educators in shaping the clinical skills of nursing students, identifying areas of strength and potential improvement in their teaching practices.
Statement of the Problem
Despite the recognized importance of nurse educators in enhancing students' clinical competencies, there is limited research on how their instructional strategies influence the practical skills of nursing students at Benue State University College of Health Sciences. While nurse educators are tasked with preparing students for clinical practice, it remains unclear how effectively they are meeting this responsibility. Challenges such as inadequate training resources, insufficient clinical exposure, and the diverse learning needs of students may hinder the development of essential clinical competencies. Furthermore, the relationship between the teaching methods of nurse educators and the clinical outcomes of nursing students has not been fully explored in the context of this institution. Therefore, this study seeks to investigate the role of nurse educators in improving students' clinical competencies and identify strategies to enhance the effectiveness of their teaching.
Objectives of the Study
1. To assess the impact of nurse educators’ teaching methods on the clinical competencies of nursing students at Benue State University College of Health Sciences.
2. To identify the challenges faced by nurse educators in enhancing clinical competencies in nursing students.
3. To recommend strategies for improving the role of nurse educators in developing students’ clinical competencies.
Research Questions
1. How do nurse educators’ teaching methods influence the clinical competencies of nursing students at Benue State University College of Health Sciences?
2. What challenges do nurse educators face in enhancing the clinical competencies of nursing students at the College of Health Sciences?
3. What strategies can be implemented to improve the effectiveness of nurse educators in developing students’ clinical competencies?
Research Hypotheses
1. Nurse educators’ teaching methods significantly improve the clinical competencies of nursing students at Benue State University College of Health Sciences.
2. Nurse educators face significant challenges in enhancing the clinical competencies of nursing students at the College of Health Sciences.
3. Implementing targeted strategies can improve the effectiveness of nurse educators in developing students’ clinical competencies.
Scope and Limitations of the Study
This study will focus on the nursing program at Benue State University College of Health Sciences, specifically examining the role of nurse educators in improving clinical competencies. The research will explore both the experiences of nurse educators and the outcomes for nursing students. Limitations of the study include the reliance on self-reported data, which may introduce bias, and the challenge of isolating the specific effects of nurse educators' methods from other factors influencing clinical competencies, such as clinical placements and institutional support. Additionally, the study may not be generalizable to other nursing institutions due to contextual differences.
