Background of the Study
Audiovisual aids are commonly used in education to enhance the learning experience and improve retention of complex concepts. In nursing education, these tools are particularly useful in teaching subjects like cardiology, which require a deep understanding of anatomy, physiology, and clinical procedures (Eze et al., 2024). Adamawa State College of Nursing offers a comprehensive nursing curriculum, including cardiology as a core subject. Despite this, nursing students often struggle with retaining and applying cardiology concepts due to the subject's complexity. Audiovisual teaching aids, such as videos, animations, and diagrams, have been shown to improve comprehension and retention by providing visual representations of abstract concepts (Ogunyomi & Mbah, 2024). This study will assess the impact of audiovisual teaching aids on nursing students’ retention of cardiology concepts at Adamawa State College of Nursing.
Statement of the Problem
The retention of cardiology concepts among nursing students in Adamawa State College of Nursing has been a subject of concern, with students often struggling to grasp and retain essential information. Traditional teaching methods may not fully engage students or provide them with sufficient support in understanding complex cardiology topics. Audiovisual aids, while commonly used in other educational contexts, have not been extensively explored in nursing education at this institution. This study seeks to investigate whether audiovisual teaching aids can improve nursing students' retention of cardiology concepts.
Objectives of the Study
1. To examine the effect of audiovisual teaching aids on the retention of cardiology concepts among nursing students at Adamawa State College of Nursing.
2. To identify the types of audiovisual teaching aids that enhance the retention of cardiology concepts.
3. To assess nursing students' perceptions of the effectiveness of audiovisual aids in understanding cardiology topics.
Research Questions
1. How do audiovisual teaching aids affect nursing students’ retention of cardiology concepts at Adamawa State College of Nursing?
2. What types of audiovisual aids are most effective in enhancing the retention of cardiology concepts?
3. How do nursing students perceive the effectiveness of audiovisual teaching aids in learning cardiology?
Research Hypotheses
1. Audiovisual teaching aids do not significantly affect the retention of cardiology concepts among nursing students at Adamawa State College of Nursing.
2. There is no significant relationship between types of audiovisual aids and nursing students' retention of cardiology concepts.
3. Nursing students' perceptions of audiovisual teaching aids do not significantly influence their retention of cardiology concepts.
Scope and Limitations of the Study
The study will focus on nursing students enrolled in cardiology courses at Adamawa State College of Nursing. Limitations include the variability in students' learning styles and potential technical issues related to the use of audiovisual aids.
