Chapter One: Introduction
1.1 Background of the Study
Violent extremism, particularly in the form of Boko Haram insurgency, has severely affected northeastern Nigeria, including Potiskum LGA, Yobe State. The radicalization of youth and the spread of extremist ideologies have posed significant security challenges in the region. Education has long been recognized as a key tool in preventing radicalization by promoting critical thinking, tolerance, and peaceful coexistence. In response to the growing threat of violent extremism, the Nigerian government, in collaboration with local stakeholders, has sought to incorporate education into counterterrorism strategies. This study will explore the role of education in countering violent extremism in Potiskum, assessing both formal and informal educational initiatives aimed at reducing radicalization.
1.2 Statement of the Problem
Potiskum LGA has experienced significant threats from violent extremist groups, particularly Boko Haram, which has targeted schools and educational facilities. While efforts to address violent extremism have included military operations, the role of education in countering radicalization has not been fully explored. This study aims to examine how education can be used as a preventive measure against violent extremism in Potiskum, focusing on the effectiveness of educational programs in promoting peace and reducing radical ideologies.

1.6 Significance of the Study
This study will contribute to the understanding of how education can be used as a tool for preventing violent extremism in the context of northeastern Nigeria. The findings will inform policymakers, educators, and security agencies on the best practices for integrating education into counterterrorism efforts and fostering peace in Potiskum and similar regions.
1.7 Scope and Limitations of the Study
