Background of the Study

Cardiovascular diseases (CVDs) are among the leading causes of morbidity and mortality globally, and Nigeria is no exception (Nwaneri et al., 2023). In Osun State, as in other parts of Nigeria, the increasing prevalence of risk factors such as hypertension, diabetes, and obesity has led to an upsurge in cardiovascular diseases (Alhassan & Tijani, 2024). Early detection and prevention of CVDs are crucial in reducing the burden of the disease and improving health outcomes. Community-based health awareness programs, led by nurses, have been shown to be effective in promoting cardiovascular health and preventing CVDs (Oladimeji et al., 2023). Nurses, with their strong community orientation, play a critical role in disseminating information about lifestyle changes, the importance of regular health checks, and the management of risk factors like hypertension and high cholesterol.

In Osun State, various nursing-led health awareness programs have been implemented in both urban and rural communities to educate the public about cardiovascular risks and promote healthy behaviors. These programs aim to empower individuals with knowledge about cardiovascular health, risk factors, and the importance of early medical intervention. Despite the growing number of community-based awareness initiatives, there is limited research assessing the effectiveness of these programs, particularly those led by nurses, in Osun State. This study seeks to investigate the effectiveness of nursing-led cardiovascular health awareness programs in Osun State, with a focus on how these programs influence knowledge, attitudes, and behaviors related to cardiovascular health.

Statement of the Problem

Cardiovascular diseases are a growing concern in Osun State, with many individuals unaware of the risk factors that predispose them to these conditions. While various health interventions have been introduced, the role of nurses in leading community-based cardiovascular health awareness programs remains under-researched. The effectiveness of these programs in educating the population, promoting preventive measures, and reducing the incidence of cardiovascular diseases has not been fully explored. There is a need for empirical evidence on the impact of nurse-led community-based awareness programs on cardiovascular health in Osun State, especially considering the limited access to healthcare in rural areas.

This study aims to fill this gap by assessing the effectiveness of community-based cardiovascular health awareness programs led by nurses in Osun State. It seeks to evaluate the extent to which these programs influence public knowledge and behaviors concerning cardiovascular health and determine the factors that enhance or hinder their effectiveness.

Objectives of the Study

1. To assess the impact of nurse-led community-based cardiovascular health awareness programs on public knowledge of cardiovascular diseases in Osun State.

2. To evaluate the effectiveness of these programs in promoting healthy behaviors and preventing cardiovascular diseases in Osun State.

3. To identify factors that contribute to or hinder the effectiveness of nurse-led cardiovascular health awareness programs in Osun State.

Research Questions

1. How effective are nurse-led community-based cardiovascular health awareness programs in increasing public knowledge of cardiovascular diseases in Osun State?

2. To what extent do nurse-led cardiovascular health awareness programs influence the adoption of healthy behaviors in Osun State?

3. What factors contribute to or hinder the effectiveness of nurse-led cardiovascular health awareness programs in Osun State?

Research Hypotheses

1. Nurse-led community-based cardiovascular health awareness programs significantly improve public knowledge of cardiovascular diseases in Osun State.

2. Nurse-led cardiovascular health awareness programs lead to a significant improvement in the adoption of healthy behaviors in Osun State.

3. Socioeconomic and cultural factors significantly affect the effectiveness of nurse-led cardiovascular health awareness programs in Osun State.

Scope and Limitations of the Study

This study focuses on evaluating nurse-led community-based cardiovascular health awareness programs in Osun State. It will consider urban and rural communities and assess public knowledge and behaviors regarding cardiovascular health. The study does not include community-based programs led by other healthcare professionals or in other regions. Limitations include the availability of program participants and possible biases in self-reported data.

Definitions of Terms

• Cardiovascular Disease: A group of disorders that affect the heart and blood vessels, including coronary artery disease, stroke, and hypertension.

• Nurse-Led: Healthcare programs or initiatives that are organized and managed by nurses, often with a focus on prevention, education, and patient care.
