Background of the Study

Chronic kidney disease (CKD) and cardiovascular diseases (CVDs) are closely related, as patients with CKD are at a significantly higher risk of developing cardiovascular complications due to shared risk factors such as hypertension, diabetes, and dyslipidemia (Adebayo & Aluko, 2024). Cardiovascular complications are the leading cause of death in CKD patients, making their management a critical aspect of healthcare for individuals suffering from both conditions. In hospitals like Federal Medical Centre (FMC), Lokoja, nurses play an essential role in managing the cardiovascular health of CKD patients, including monitoring vital signs, administering medications, providing education, and coordinating care with other healthcare providers (Chukwudi et al., 2024).

However, managing cardiovascular complications in CKD patients presents significant challenges due to the complexity of the two conditions. Nurses must possess specialized knowledge and skills to manage the interplay between kidney disease and heart disease, as well as to address complications such as fluid overload, electrolyte imbalances, and hypertension, which are common in these patients (Ibrahim et al., 2023). The importance of nursing care in managing these conditions cannot be overstated, yet there is limited research on the specific roles of nurses in managing cardiovascular complications in CKD patients, particularly in the context of FMC Lokoja.

This study aims to investigate the role of nurses in managing cardiovascular complications in CKD patients at Federal Medical Centre, Lokoja, with the goal of understanding how nursing interventions can improve patient outcomes and reduce the risks associated with both diseases.

Statement of the Problem

Chronic kidney disease and cardiovascular disease often coexist, complicating the management of both conditions. Nurses play a critical role in managing the cardiovascular complications that arise in CKD patients; however, there is insufficient research on how nurses in Nigerian healthcare settings, particularly at FMC Lokoja, manage these dual health issues. The lack of comprehensive studies on the role of nurses in managing cardiovascular complications in CKD patients hampers the development of best practices for this patient population and affects the overall quality of care. This study seeks to address this gap by exploring the nursing role in managing cardiovascular complications in CKD patients at FMC Lokoja.

Objectives of the Study

1. To assess the role of nurses in managing cardiovascular complications in CKD patients at Federal Medical Centre, Lokoja.

2. To evaluate the impact of nursing interventions on the cardiovascular health of CKD patients at FMC Lokoja.

3. To identify the challenges faced by nurses in managing cardiovascular complications in CKD patients at FMC Lokoja.

Research Questions

1. What is the role of nurses in managing cardiovascular complications in CKD patients at Federal Medical Centre, Lokoja?

2. How do nursing interventions affect the cardiovascular health of CKD patients at FMC Lokoja?

3. What challenges do nurses face in managing cardiovascular complications in CKD patients at FMC Lokoja?

Research Hypotheses

1. Nurses at FMC Lokoja play a significant role in managing cardiovascular complications in CKD patients.

2. Nursing interventions improve the cardiovascular health outcomes of CKD patients at FMC Lokoja.

3. Nurses at FMC Lokoja face significant challenges in managing cardiovascular complications in CKD patients.

Scope and Limitations of the Study

This study focuses on nurses working at Federal Medical Centre, Lokoja, who are involved in the care of CKD patients with cardiovascular complications. It will assess their roles, interventions, and the challenges they face. Limitations include the availability of nurses for participation and the generalizability of findings beyond the hospital setting.

Definitions of Terms

• Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD): A condition characterized by a gradual loss of kidney function over time.

• Cardiovascular Complications: Health issues related to the heart and blood vessels that arise in CKD patients, such as heart failure, hypertension, and stroke.

• Nursing Interventions: Actions taken by nurses to monitor, manage, and improve the health of patients, particularly in managing dual conditions like CKD and cardiovascular disease.
