Chapter One: Introduction
1.1 Background of the Study
Social media platforms have become a powerful tool for communication, interaction, and information dissemination. However, these platforms also serve as fertile ground for radicalization, particularly among vulnerable youth. In Gusau LGA, Zamfara State, where youth unemployment, poverty, and insecurity are prevalent, social media has been identified as a significant influence in shaping the attitudes and behaviors of young people. According to research by Ibrahim and Suleiman (2024), radical groups often use social media to spread extremist ideologies, recruit followers, and incite violence. This study examines how social media contributes to youth radicalization in Gusau, with a particular focus on the factors that make young people susceptible to online radicalization and the broader security implications for the community.
1.2 Statement of the Problem
Youth radicalization in Gusau LGA has become a growing concern, with many young people being exposed to extremist ideologies through social media. The ability of radical groups to exploit social media platforms for recruitment and incitement poses significant security risks, exacerbating tensions in a region already dealing with insurgency, banditry, and other forms of violence. This study aims to investigate the extent to which social media influences youth radicalization in Gusau and explore the underlying factors contributing to this phenomenon.
