Chapter One: Introduction

1.1 Background of the Study
Civil society organizations (CSOs) have long been recognized as critical players in peacebuilding and conflict resolution. In Makurdi Local Government Area, Benue State, CSOs have been instrumental in mediating between conflicting groups, advocating for peaceful coexistence, and providing humanitarian aid to those affected by violence. The state has experienced various forms of conflict, including ethnic and communal clashes, which have led to loss of lives and property. According to Anokwuru (2023), CSOs in Benue have played a pivotal role in facilitating dialogue and peace initiatives, often acting as intermediaries between communities, local governments, and security agencies. This study will evaluate the effectiveness of CSOs in peacebuilding efforts in Makurdi LGA, assessing their impact on local conflicts and identifying areas for improvement in their peacebuilding strategies.

1.2 Statement of the Problem
Despite the significant role that CSOs have played in peacebuilding in Makurdi, the effectiveness of their interventions has been questioned due to challenges such as limited funding, lack of capacity, and sometimes, political interference. • How can CSOs improve their effectiveness in conflict resolution and peace promotion?

1.5 Research Hypothesis

  • H₀: CSOs do not significantly contribute to peacebuilding in Makurdi LGA.

  • H₁: CSOs significantly contribute to peacebuilding in Makurdi LGA.

  • H₂: The challenges faced by CSOs hinder their effectiveness in peacebuilding efforts in Makurdi LGA.

1.6 Significance of the Study
This study will contribute to the understanding of the role that CSOs play in conflict resolution and peacebuilding in Benue State. It will provide recommendations for improving the capacity and effectiveness of CSOs in promoting peace and addressing the root causes of conflicts in the region.

1.7 Scope and Limitations of the Study
The study will focus on the activities of CSOs in Makurdi LGA and will assess their contributions to peacebuilding. Limitations include potential difficulties in accessing sensitive data from CSOs and conflict-affected communities, as well as the challenge of evaluating the long-term impact of peacebuilding initiatives.
