Background of the Study

Clinical decision-making is a cornerstone of nursing practice, and the ability to make sound, evidence-based decisions is essential for providing high-quality patient care. Confidence in clinical decision-making is often developed through hands-on training, where students actively engage in real-world clinical scenarios under the supervision of experienced healthcare professionals. Bayero University, Kano, recognizes the importance of hands-on training in developing nursing students' practical skills and confidence in making decisions related to patient care. Hands-on training allows students to practice clinical skills such as assessment, diagnosis, and treatment planning, which are essential to effective nursing care (Musa & Ibrahim, 2023).

While theoretical knowledge can provide the foundation for nursing practice, it is the practical application of this knowledge in real-life situations that cultivates confidence and competence. In nursing education, there is a growing emphasis on clinical placements, simulations, and practical exercises to help students develop the decision-making skills necessary for their future practice. However, the extent to which hands-on training influences nursing students’ confidence in clinical decision-making at Bayero University, Kano, has not been extensively studied. This research seeks to examine the impact of hands-on training on nursing students' confidence and their ability to make effective clinical decisions.

Statement of the Problem

Nursing students often face challenges in translating theoretical knowledge into practical skills, and this gap can lead to lower levels of confidence when making clinical decisions. While hands-on training is a vital component of nursing education, its specific impact on students' confidence in clinical decision-making at Bayero University, Kano, remains unclear. This study aims to assess how hands-on training influences nursing students' clinical decision-making confidence and identify factors that may enhance or hinder this process.

Objectives of the Study

1. To assess the impact of hands-on training on nursing students' confidence in clinical decision-making at Bayero University, Kano.

2. To identify the specific aspects of hands-on training that contribute to increased confidence in clinical decision-making.

3. To explore the challenges faced by nursing students in making clinical decisions and how hands-on training addresses these challenges.

Research Questions

1. How does hands-on training impact nursing students' confidence in clinical decision-making at Bayero University, Kano?

2. What aspects of hands-on training contribute most to increased confidence in clinical decision-making?

3. What challenges do nursing students face in clinical decision-making, and how does hands-on training help overcome these challenges?

Research Hypotheses

1. Hands-on training significantly enhances nursing students' confidence in clinical decision-making at Bayero University, Kano.

2. Nursing students who undergo hands-on training are more confident in their clinical decision-making abilities than those who do not.

3. Hands-on training improves nursing students’ ability to overcome challenges in clinical decision-making.

Scope and Limitations of the Study

This study will focus on nursing students enrolled at Bayero University, Kano, who have undergone hands-on training. The study's limitations include the difficulty of isolating other factors that may influence clinical decision-making confidence, such as prior clinical experience or individual differences in learning styles.
