Chapter One: Introduction

1.1 Background of the Study
Cultism in tertiary institutions in Nigeria has become a significant security issue, affecting students, staff, and the broader community. In Lafia Local Government Area (LGA), Nasarawa State, cultism among university and polytechnic students has led to incidents of violence, intimidation, and unlawful activities. According to Ibrahim (2024), cult groups in educational institutions often engage in criminal activities such as assault, drug trafficking, and other forms of violence, which disrupt academic activities and create an environment of fear and insecurity. The rise of cultism has challenged university authorities and law enforcement agencies to develop strategies to combat the growing threat to campus security. This study will examine the impact of cultism on security in tertiary institutions in Lafia, assessing the extent of violence, its consequences on campus life, and the measures being taken to address the issue.

1.2 Statement of the Problem
Cultism in tertiary institutions has led to increasing violence, lawlessness, and insecurity in several Nigerian universities and polytechnics, including those in Lafia. The persistent activities of cult groups have undermined campus safety, creating a hostile environment for both students and staff. Despite various interventions, cultism continues to be a major concern, but there is a lack of detailed research on its specific impact on security within Lafia's tertiary institutions. This study aims to assess the security implications of cultism in Lafia and evaluate the effectiveness of current measures to curb it.

1.3 Objectives of the Study

  • To assess the impact of cultism on security in tertiary institutions in Lafia LGA.

  • To examine the effects of cultism-related violence on academic activities and student life.

  • To evaluate the effectiveness of interventions aimed at addressing cultism in Lafia's tertiary institutions.

1.4 Research Questions

  • How does cultism impact security in tertiary institutions in Lafia LGA?

  • What effects does cultism-related violence have on academic activities in Lafia?

  • How effective are the current measures in combating cultism in tertiary institutions in Lafia?

1.5 Research Hypothesis

  • H₀: Cultism does not significantly impact security in tertiary institutions in Lafia LGA.

  • H₁: Cultism significantly impacts security in tertiary institutions in Lafia LGA.

  • H₂: Current measures to combat cultism in Lafia are ineffective.

1.6 Significance of the Study
This study will provide valuable insights into the security challenges posed by cultism in tertiary institutions in Lafia, with implications for policy formulation and intervention strategies aimed at reducing violence and improving campus safety. The findings will inform both educational authorities and law enforcement agencies in addressing this critical issue.

1.7 Scope and Limitations of the Study
The study will focus on tertiary institutions within Lafia LGA and their experience with cultism. Limitations include the challenge of obtaining accurate data due to the secretive nature of cult activities and the potential reluctance of respondents to disclose information.

1.8 Operational Definition of Terms

  • Cultism: The practice of secret societies or groups within educational institutions engaging in illegal activities, often marked by violence and intimidation.

  • Security: The state of being free from danger or threat, especially within the context of public safety in educational institutions.

  • Violence: Physical force used to harm or intimidate others, often associated with cult activities in this context.
