Background of the Study
Internally displaced persons (IDPs) are individuals who have been forced to flee their homes due to conflict, natural disasters, or other emergencies but remain within their country’s borders. In Nigeria, the conflict in the northeastern region, particularly in Yobe State, has led to significant displacement, with thousands of people seeking refuge in local communities. Damaturu Local Government Area, the capital of Yobe State, has become a key area for the reception and support of IDPs. Local governments have an essential role to play in providing assistance to these vulnerable groups through policies aimed at improving their living conditions, access to healthcare, education, and employment opportunities. This study will explore how the local government in Damaturu has contributed to enhancing the well-being of IDPs through its policies and initiatives, assessing both the successes and the limitations of these interventions.
1.2 Statement of the Problem
Despite various efforts to support IDPs in Damaturu, many continue to face challenges related to inadequate housing, poor sanitation, lack of access to healthcare and education, and limited livelihood opportunities. The local government, though responsible for addressing some of these needs, may face challenges such as limited resources, capacity constraints, and logistical difficulties in meeting the needs of the growing displaced population. This research aims to investigate the role of local government in supporting IDPs, evaluating the effectiveness of its policies and programs in improving their quality of life.

The local government faces significant challenges in providing adequate support to IDPs in Damaturu.
Local government interventions have a positive impact on the living conditions of IDPs in Damaturu.
1.6 Significance of the Study
This study is significant as it will provide an in-depth assessment of the role of local governments in managing the challenges faced by IDPs. The findings will offer recommendations for improving the policies and practices that aim to address the needs of displaced populations. This research will be valuable to local government officials, humanitarian organizations, and policymakers concerned with the welfare of IDPs.
1.7 Scope and Limitations of the Study
This study will focus on the role of local government in supporting IDPs in Damaturu LGA, Yobe State. The research will examine the impact of policies on the provision of shelter, healthcare, education, and livelihood support. Limitations may include difficulties in accessing comprehensive data on local government programs and potential biases in self-reported experiences from IDPs.
