Chapter One: Introduction

1.1 Background of the Study
The abuse of illicit drugs has long been linked to various forms of criminal behavior, including youth violence, particularly in urban centers across Nigeria. In Minna LGA, Niger State, the growing problem of drug abuse among young people has become a critical issue for law enforcement and community leaders. A study by Suleiman and Ibraheem (2024) highlighted that the widespread use of substances like cannabis, codeine, and tramadol among youths has been a major catalyst for violence, including gang wars, armed robbery, and violent protests. These drugs, when abused, alter the psychological and emotional state of young people, making them prone to aggression, impaired decision-making, and reckless behavior. This pattern of youth violence has disrupted the peace and stability of Minna LGA and has posed a significant challenge to local security forces. Drug abuse, when combined with social, economic, and political factors, contributes to an escalation in violent acts within the community. This study aims to explore the link between drug abuse and youth violence in Minna, examining the underlying causes and proposing solutions to mitigate the issue.

1.2 Statement of the Problem
In Minna, the surge in youth violence is closely associated with the increasing rates of drug abuse among the younger population. Many youths, particularly those in impoverished communities, have turned to drugs as a means of escape from economic hardships, social instability, or peer pressure. This has led to a rise in criminal activities such as drug-related violence, robberies, and even deaths. Despite various government efforts to address the issue, the situation remains critical. This study seeks to investigate how drug abuse contributes to youth violence in Minna, highlighting the specific challenges faced by the local community.

1.3 Objectives of the Study

  • To examine the relationship between drug abuse and youth violence in Minna LGA.

  • To assess the social, economic, and psychological effects of drug abuse on youth behavior in Minna.

  • To recommend strategies for combating drug abuse and its impact on youth violence in Minna.

1.4 Research Questions

  • How does drug abuse contribute to youth violence in Minna LGA?

  • What are the socio-economic factors that exacerbate youth violence related to drug abuse in Minna?

  • What interventions can be implemented to reduce drug abuse and youth violence in Minna?

1.5 Research Hypothesis

  • H₀: Drug abuse does not significantly contribute to youth violence in Minna LGA.

  • H₁: Drug abuse significantly contributes to youth violence in Minna LGA.

  • H₂: The availability of illicit drugs in Minna LGA is directly correlated with an increase in youth violence.

1.6 Significance of the Study
The findings from this study will provide valuable insights into the impact of drug abuse on youth violence, helping policymakers, law enforcement, and community leaders design more effective intervention programs. The study will also raise awareness about the need for comprehensive drug prevention and rehabilitation strategies to combat youth violence in Minna. It will contribute to the academic discourse on drug abuse and its social consequences, serving as a reference for future studies on similar issues in other Nigerian LGAs.

1.7 Scope and Limitations of the Study
This study will focus on the relationship between drug abuse and youth violence within Minna LGA, Niger State. It will explore the socio-economic, psychological, and cultural factors that contribute to the issue. The research will be limited to youth between the ages of 15 and 30, with a focus on their experiences with drug abuse and engagement in violent behaviors. A limitation of the study may include challenges in gathering sensitive data from youths who are involved in illicit drug use or violent activities due to fear of legal consequences.

1.8 Operational Definition of Terms

  • Drug Abuse: The habitual consumption of illicit substances that leads to harmful consequences for physical, psychological, and social well-being.

  • Youth Violence: Aggressive or violent behavior exhibited by individuals between the ages of 15 and 30, often resulting in harm to others.

  • Substance Abuse Prevention: Efforts aimed at reducing the initiation and continued use of drugs, particularly among vulnerable populations such as youth.
