Chapter One: Introduction
1.1 Background of the Study
As the digital age progresses, the prevalence of cybercrime has risen dramatically across the world, including in Nigeria. In Kano Municipal LGA, the growth of internet usage, mobile phones, and online platforms has increased exposure to various forms of cybercrime, such as identity theft, financial fraud, and online harassment. According to Bello & Usman (2023), cybercrime awareness is essential for individuals and organizations to protect themselves from digital threats. However, many residents of Kano Municipal still lack adequate knowledge about cyber threats and digital security practices. This study seeks to assess the level of awareness about cybercrime and digital security among the residents of Kano Municipal, investigating how informed they are about potential risks and what measures they take to protect themselves online.
1.2 Statement of the Problem
While digital technology has provided numerous benefits, it has also introduced new risks, particularly in the form of cybercrime. In Kano Municipal, many residents remain unaware of basic digital security practices, which makes them vulnerable to cyber-attacks. Although there are growing efforts to raise awareness about cybercrime, the level of knowledge among the general public remains insufficient. This study will investigate the extent of cybercrime awareness in Kano Municipal and the level of preparedness in terms of digital security practices.
1.3 Objectives of the Study

To assess the level of awareness about cybercrime among residents of Kano Municipal LGA.

To evaluate the digital security practices employed by individuals and organizations in Kano Municipal.

To identify the factors that influence cybercrime awareness and digital security in Kano Municipal.
1.4 Research Questions

What is the level of awareness about cybercrime among residents of Kano Municipal?

1.5 Research Hypothesis

H₀: There is no significant relationship between cybercrime awareness and digital security practices in Kano Municipal.

H₁: There is a significant relationship between cybercrime awareness and digital security practices in Kano Municipal.

H₂: The level of cybercrime awareness is positively influenced by education and access to information.
1.6 Significance of the Study
This study will provide important insights into the awareness of cybercrime and the adoption of digital security practices in Kano Municipal. The findings will help inform public awareness campaigns, guide law enforcement agencies, and assist in the development of policies aimed at reducing cybercrime. By highlighting gaps in awareness and practice, the research will contribute to improving digital security in Kano Municipal and other similar urban areas.
1.7 Scope and Limitations of the Study
The study will focus on cybercrime awareness and digital security practices in Kano Municipal LGA, Kano State. It will assess individual and organizational approaches to digital security. Limitations include the challenge of obtaining detailed information from respondents who may be reluctant to discuss cybercrime experiences due to privacy concerns.

Cybercrime: Criminal activities carried out using computers or the internet, including identity theft, fraud, and hacking.

Digital Security: Measures taken to protect computer systems, networks, and personal information from unauthorized access or attack.
