Chapter One: Introduction
1.1 Background of the Study
Jos North, located in Plateau State, has been the epicenter of recurrent ethno-religious conflicts, which have led to significant violence, displacement, and disruption of social relations. The town has experienced cycles of ethnic and religious clashes, with Muslims and Christians often at the center of the conflicts. According to Ojo & Ibrahim (2024), these conflicts have deepened ethnic divisions, eroded trust between different communities, and undermined social cohesion in the region. The historical roots of these conflicts can be traced to competition for resources, political power, and religious differences, which have been exacerbated by the presence of external factors, including the proliferation of small arms. This study seeks to examine the impact of ethno-religious conflicts on social cohesion in Jos North, exploring how these conflicts have affected relationships between different ethnic and religious groups, as well as the broader implications for peace and security in the region.
1.2 Statement of the Problem

Despite peacebuilding efforts by government and civil society organizations, the long-term impact of these conflicts on social relations remains under-explored. This study seeks to investigate the effects of these ethno-religious conflicts on social cohesion in Jos North and provide recommendations for fostering peace and unity in the region.
