Chapter One: Introduction

1.1 Background of the Study
Jos North, located in Plateau State, has been the epicenter of recurrent ethno-religious conflicts, which have led to significant violence, displacement, and disruption of social relations. The town has experienced cycles of ethnic and religious clashes, with Muslims and Christians often at the center of the conflicts. According to Ojo & Ibrahim (2024), these conflicts have deepened ethnic divisions, eroded trust between different communities, and undermined social cohesion in the region. The historical roots of these conflicts can be traced to competition for resources, political power, and religious differences, which have been exacerbated by the presence of external factors, including the proliferation of small arms. This study seeks to examine the impact of ethno-religious conflicts on social cohesion in Jos North, exploring how these conflicts have affected relationships between different ethnic and religious groups, as well as the broader implications for peace and security in the region.

1.2 Statement of the Problem
The persistent ethno-religious conflicts in Jos North have had a profound impact on social cohesion, leading to mistrust, fear, and isolation among different communities. These tensions have hindered efforts toward reconciliation and the rebuilding of trust. Despite peacebuilding efforts by government and civil society organizations, the long-term impact of these conflicts on social relations remains under-explored. This study seeks to investigate the effects of these ethno-religious conflicts on social cohesion in Jos North and provide recommendations for fostering peace and unity in the region.

  • H₁: Ethno-religious conflicts have significantly impacted social cohesion in Jos North.

  • H₂: Efforts by government and NGOs have had a significant positive effect on social cohesion in Jos North.

1.6 Significance of the Study
This study will provide valuable insights into the impact of ethno-religious conflicts on social cohesion in Jos North and offer recommendations for promoting peace and unity in the region. The findings will be crucial for policymakers, community leaders, and organizations involved in peacebuilding and conflict resolution. By addressing the underlying causes of conflict and proposing strategies for rebuilding trust, this study aims to contribute to long-term social cohesion and stability in Jos North and similar regions in Nigeria.

1.7 Scope and Limitations of the Study
The study focuses on the impact of ethno-religious conflicts on social cohesion in Jos North LGA, Plateau State. It will examine the effects of these conflicts on inter-community relationships, as well as the role of government and NGOs in promoting peace. Limitations include challenges in gathering data from conflict-affected areas and potential biases in respondents’ accounts of the situation.
