Background of the Study
Sleep is a critical factor that influences cognitive functions, including memory, attention, problem-solving, and decision-making, all of which are essential for nursing practice (Akinmoladun & Ojo, 2024). In nursing education, students often face high levels of stress, academic workload, and clinical responsibilities, which can disrupt their sleep patterns, leading to sleep deprivation. Sleep deprivation, defined as the condition of receiving inadequate sleep over a period, has been shown to impair cognitive functions, leading to decreased alertness and poorer academic performance (Adebayo et al., 2023).
At Gombe State College of Nursing, students are expected to manage rigorous academic and clinical schedules, which often result in reduced sleep quality and duration. Research has highlighted the significant role of sleep in enhancing learning, memory consolidation, and overall cognitive performance (Khan & Zubair, 2025). However, the effect of sleep deprivation on nursing students’ cognitive performance at this institution has not been explored in depth. This study will examine how sleep deprivation affects nursing students’ cognitive performance, particularly in relation to their ability to retain information, focus during lectures, and perform effectively during practical training.
Statement of the Problem
Nursing students at Gombe State College of Nursing often face challenges that contribute to sleep deprivation, such as long study hours, clinical placements, and emotional stress. Despite the known impact of sleep deprivation on cognitive performance, there is limited research specifically addressing how this issue affects nursing students in the region. This study aims to investigate the cognitive consequences of sleep deprivation among nursing students, providing insights into how inadequate sleep impacts their academic and clinical performance.
Objectives of the Study
1. To evaluate the effect of sleep deprivation on nursing students’ cognitive performance at Gombe State College of Nursing.
2. To assess the relationship between sleep duration and cognitive performance in nursing students.
3. To explore the coping strategies used by nursing students to manage sleep deprivation and maintain cognitive functioning.
Research Questions
1. How does sleep deprivation affect nursing students' cognitive performance at Gombe State College of Nursing?
2. What is the relationship between sleep duration and cognitive performance in nursing students?
3. What strategies do nursing students use to cope with sleep deprivation and maintain cognitive performance?
Research Hypotheses
1. Sleep deprivation significantly reduces the cognitive performance of nursing students at Gombe State College of Nursing.
2. There is a negative correlation between sleep duration and cognitive performance among nursing students.
3. Nursing students who employ effective coping strategies show less cognitive impairment due to sleep deprivation.
Scope and Limitations of the Study
This study will focus on nursing students at Gombe State College of Nursing. Limitations include the reliance on self-reported data regarding sleep patterns, which may introduce bias, and the inability to control for other factors that may affect cognitive performance, such as stress levels and academic motivation.
Definitions of Terms
