Background of the Study

Political debates have become an integral part of democratic processes, providing voters with opportunities to assess the suitability and policies of political candidates. In Nigeria, the effectiveness of political debates in shaping public opinion, particularly regarding female candidates, has garnered significant attention in recent years. Despite the growing participation of women in politics, female candidates still face substantial challenges in gaining the same level of recognition and credibility as their male counterparts (Ogunleye & Afolabi, 2023). Public perception of female candidates is often influenced by deeply entrenched gender stereotypes, which can either hinder or enhance their political prospects (Kazeem & Adamu, 2024).

In Katsina Local Government Area, where political participation remains largely male-dominated, political debates offer a unique platform for female candidates to present their policies, engage with voters, and build their public profiles (Bello & Ibrahim, 2023). However, the impact of such debates on the public perception of female candidates remains underexplored. While debates provide visibility and enable candidates to directly engage with the electorate, the effectiveness of these platforms in overcoming gender biases and shaping voters’ opinions about female candidates is yet to be fully understood (Daramola & Osuji, 2024).

Political debates can be instrumental in reshaping public perceptions by highlighting the competence and readiness of female candidates to lead. However, societal biases, media portrayal, and the often patriarchal nature of political spaces may affect how female candidates are perceived during debates. This study seeks to examine the role of political debates in influencing public perception of female candidates in Katsina, focusing on the effectiveness of debates as a tool for enhancing women’s political visibility and the challenges they face in this regard.

1.2 Statement of the Problem

While political debates provide an opportunity for candidates to showcase their qualifications, female candidates in Katsina often face the added challenge of combating gender stereotypes that affect public perception (Usman & Sulaimon, 2023). Many female candidates are often judged more harshly than their male counterparts, with their qualifications and policies frequently overshadowed by societal expectations of women’s roles in politics (Yusuf & Nwankwo, 2023). Despite these challenges, political debates remain a crucial element of the election process, yet little research has been conducted on their effectiveness in shifting public attitudes towards female candidates. This study aims to assess the impact of political debates on the public perception of female candidates in Katsina Local Government Area, evaluating both the opportunities and barriers that debates present for women in politics.

1.3 Objectives of the Study

  1. To assess the impact of political debates on the public perception of female candidates in Katsina Local Government Area.

  2. What factors influence public perception of female candidates during political debates in Katsina?

  3. How effective are political debates in enhancing the visibility of female candidates in Katsina?

1.5 Research Hypothesis

  1. Political debates positively influence the public perception of female candidates in Katsina.

  2. Gender biases significantly influence the public perception of female candidates during political debates.

  3. Political debates effectively enhance the visibility of female candidates in Katsina.

1.6 Significance of the Study

This study is significant because it will provide valuable insights into the role of political debates in shaping public perceptions of female candidates in Katsina. By understanding how debates impact voters’ opinions, policymakers and political parties can better utilize debates to promote gender inclusivity in the political process. The findings will also inform future debates and provide a basis for addressing gender biases in political communication.

1.7 Scope and Limitations of the Study

The study will focus on political debates in Katsina Local Government Area and their impact on female candidates during local elections. It will involve the analysis of debates and interviews with voters, political analysts, and female candidates. Limitations may include the potential difficulty in obtaining unbiased data due to entrenched gender biases in the region.

1.8 Operational Definition of Terms

  • Public Perception: The collective opinion or attitude held by voters towards a political candidate, shaped by factors such as media coverage and personal beliefs.
