Background of the Study
Political violence has been a pervasive issue in Nigerian elections, affecting various political actors, with women being disproportionately impacted (Nwachukwu & Adejumo, 2024). Yola North, in Adamawa State, is one of the regions where political violence intersects with gender dynamics, exacerbating the challenges faced by female politicians and voters (Aliyu & Bukar, 2025). Historically, women in the region have encountered violence not only due to their gender but also as a result of political competition and power struggles (Bala & Ibrahim, 2023). Gender-based violence in politics, including physical assaults, intimidation, and sexual harassment, has created significant barriers for women’s participation in the electoral process and political leadership (Musa & Hamza, 2024). This study seeks to examine how gender influences the experience of political violence in Yola North and how it affects women’s engagement in politics.

1.2 Statement of the Problem
The intersection between gender and political violence in Yola North presents a critical challenge to women’s political participation. Women face not only the general political violence that impacts all candidates but also gender-specific violence, which often involves attacks on their gender identity or roles (Adeniyi & Kamal, 2023). These gendered forms of violence discourage women from running for office, voting, or engaging in political activism, further entrenching gender inequality in political spaces. This study aims to explore the ways in which political violence in Yola North affects women differently from men and the mechanisms that could mitigate these gendered challenges.

1.3 Objectives of the Study

  • To assess the forms of political violence faced by women in Yola North Local Government Area.

  • To evaluate the impact of gendered political violence on women’s political participation in Yola North.

  • To explore strategies for reducing gender-based political violence in the region.

1.4 Research Questions

  • What forms of political violence are specifically targeted at women in Yola North Local Government Area?

  • How does gendered political violence affect women’s political participation in Yola North?

  • What measures can be taken to reduce gender-based political violence in the region?

1.5 Research Hypothesis

  • Women in Yola North experience more gender-specific forms of political violence compared to men.

  • Gendered political violence negatively impacts women’s involvement in politics in Yola North.

  • The implementation of specific anti-violence policies will reduce the incidence of political violence against women in Yola North.

1.6 Significance of the Study
This study is significant because it highlights the gendered dimensions of political violence, which is often overlooked in the broader discussions on political violence in Nigeria. By focusing on Yola North, the study will contribute to a deeper understanding of how gender and political violence intersect and provide recommendations for policies aimed at increasing women’s safety and political participation. It will also contribute to the broader discourse on improving electoral processes and ensuring gender equality in politics.

1.7 Scope and Limitations of the Study
This study will focus on the impact of political violence on women’s political participation in Yola North Local Government Area, Adamawa State. The study will be limited to the analysis of gendered violence during election periods and will not address violence in other contexts. A limitation of the study includes the potential difficulty in accessing sensitive data from political actors or victims of violence.

1.8 Operational Definition of Terms

  • Political Violence: Acts of violence or intimidation aimed at influencing political outcomes or deterring political participation.

  • Gendered Political Violence: Violence that targets individuals based on their gender, often manifesting as sexual violence, harassment, or other forms of gender-specific abuse.

  • Political Participation: The involvement of individuals in the political process, including voting, campaigning, or holding political office.
