Background of the Study
Civic education plays a crucial role in empowering individuals, particularly marginalized groups such as women, by providing them with the necessary knowledge and skills to engage effectively in the political process (Adamu & Othman, 2023). In Damaturu, Yobe State, women’s political participation has traditionally been limited due to low levels of political awareness and a lack of education about the political process (Bello & Ibrahim, 2024). Civic education initiatives aim to bridge this gap by educating women about their political rights, the electoral process, and the significance of their involvement in political decision-making (Usman & Garba, 2025). Despite these efforts, women’s participation in politics remains low in many areas of Nigeria, including Damaturu, due to factors such as cultural norms and institutional barriers (Mohammed & Aliyu, 2023). This study examines the impact of civic education programs on women’s political participation in Damaturu, focusing on how such initiatives contribute to raising political awareness and fostering greater political engagement among women.
1.2 Statement of the Problem
In Damaturu Local Government Area, women have historically faced challenges in engaging with the political system, primarily due to limited access to information and educational resources (Shuaibu & Mohammed, 2023). This study seeks to evaluate how effective civic education has been in encouraging women to participate in electoral processes, run for political offices, and become more involved in political discourse in Damaturu.
