Background of the Study
The intersection of family responsibilities and political careers is a significant challenge for women, particularly in Jos South Local Government Area, Plateau State, where traditional gender roles place the bulk of domestic duties on women (Aminu & Saleh, 2023). While women have made strides in political leadership, balancing these dual roles often comes with considerable strain due to societal expectations and the demanding nature of political office (Tijani & Umar, 2024). Female politicians are expected to excel in their political roles while maintaining their family responsibilities, which can lead to stress, burnout, and a reduction in political participation (Haruna & Salim, 2025). This study aims to evaluate the challenges faced by female politicians in Jos South, examining the ways in which family obligations affect their political careers and how they manage these competing demands.
1.2 Statement of the Problem
In Jos South, female politicians often struggle to balance their political careers with family responsibilities, particularly in a context where women are expected to fulfill traditional roles as wives and mothers (Ahmed & Fadima, 2023). This dual burden hinders their political engagement, limiting their effectiveness and political mobility. Furthermore, the lack of supportive structures such as childcare facilities, flexible working hours, and adequate domestic help exacerbates these challenges (Abdullahi & Nura, 2024). This study seeks to explore the specific challenges women face in balancing family and political careers in Jos South and the strategies they employ to cope with these pressures.
