BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY

Human gestation is commonly referred to as pregnancy. It is the formation of one or more children in the uterus, known as an embryo or foetus (Wikipedia 2009). In humans, pregnancy typically lasts nine (9) months. During the first eight weeks after conception, the embryo is creating offspring, and the term foetus is used until childbirth. Many cultures split medical or legal definitions of human pregnancy into three trimester periods of three months each to simplify reference to the various phases of prenatal development. The risk of miscarriage is greatest during the first trimester (natural death of embryo or fetus). According to Grunseit,  (2017), the development of the foetus may be more readily tracked and identified during the second trimester. The third trimester is distinguished by continued foetal growth and the formation of foetal fat storage (Wikipedia 2009).

Abortion as observed by Truffers (2016), is the removal of a developing child from the womb between one and seven months of pregnancy, which means delivering birth before the appropriate period. Most abortions are referred described as miscarriages of birth. Abortion should be considered in cases of life-threatening sickness. However, owing to cultural changes and orientations, it is being practised at will. It is a circumstance in which life is being tempered, and it is getting too perilous and harmful to the mother's life. Abortion is also a method of removing a pregnancy from the womb, either with pills (medical abortion), which entails taking medications to induce miscarriage, or through surgery (surgical abortion), in which the foetus is removed from the womb.

Most abortions may be performed during the day, which means you won't have to stay at the clinic overnight. Every year, over 12,000 adolescent females have abortions (Kumar  2015). There are two forms of abortion: PILLS abortion and SURGICAL abortion. After 9 to 24 weeks of pregnancy, pills abortion is utilized, which entails taking medications to force the womb to contract and push out the pregnancy. Also, at 22 weeks, the foetus is pushed out and an injection is administered to the womb. These injections are provided to maintain the uterus's homeostasis balance. However, a visit to the doctor for a checkup is also essential. Surgical abortion is the dilatation and evacuation of the foetus that occurs between 15 and 24 weeks of pregnancy.

During a surgical abortion, surgeons must remove the pregnancy with narrow forceps pushed through the womb's neck. This type of abortion is performed under general anaesthesia (asleep). In the case of surgical abortions, one can go to the clinic and return home the same day (for pregnancies up to 20 weeks) (Bpass 2009). Abortion is clearly on the rise and has been highlighted as a societal concern in so many ways that it jeopardises a teenager's scholastic future as a contributing member of society. She is openly vilified by society, which eventually converts the girl into a prostitute. The socio-cultural background of individuals in Numan Local Government is another key cause of pregnancy and abortion. This is due to the girl-orientation child's or beliefs, which subjected her to early hawking at the age of nine or ten. These improper exposures expose her to danger, and the deception of irresponsible young boys and old adults frequently compromises her purity (Grunseit 2017).

It is a well-known reality that the influence of pregnancy and abortion on girl-child education in our secondary schools is spreading in our communities, and this has to be abolished or decreased at the local level. In other words, in order to overcome this problem, parents and instructors must mould their children into better adults. In order to prevent incidences of unplanned pregnancy, the government should implement sex education in our secondary schools and postsecondary institutions, as well as related academic curricula.
